A full fringe is a serious commitment.
Like a marriage, you have to work at it. You have to promise to be there for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health.
The honeymoon phase is blissful. Fresh out of the hairdressers, a full fringe can do no wrong. But a few weeks in, the gloss fades, and the cowlicks whip out, and styling becomes more of an effort. It’s hot and sweatyy, but not in an enjoyable way.
It’s no wonder that so many fringe marriages end in hair divorce.
However, there is a way to recreate a fringe’s chicness in a safe and non-committal way.
The solution? Curtain bangs.
This style of fringe is parted down the middle, with the hair often framing the face. Curtain bangs are low-maintenance in comparison with their fuller counterpart due to the shaggy appearance of the cut.
With Instagram’s help, TikTok and a show called Normal People, curtain bangs became 2020’s most lusted after hairstyle. When Normal People hit our screens back in March, not only did people thirst for a silver chain and Paul Mescal, they also longed for Daisy Edgar Jones’ parted fringe.
Currently, there are over 61,000 posts on Instagram with #curtainbangs in the tagline, while there are 223.1 million views on TikTok under the same hashtag.
The brilliance of curtain bangs lies in their versatility. Long enough to grow out without going through an awkward stage, they can be pulled back or even worn with a curl. The layered shape will suit almost all face shapes but make sure to consult your hairstylist beforehand to tailor the cut to you.
Stars such as Jameela Jamil and Alexa Chung have been sporting the style for years with Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande taking note and trying curtain bangs in recent months.
They even got the royal seal of approval when the Duchess of Cambridge debuted hers on an official royal visit to Ireland earlier in the year.
Curtain bangs lure people in with their quiet sexiness and when done right they are effortless and achingly cool.
Plus, 2020 has quenched any patience we had left with getting glam so the ease at which they can style is very welcome. All you need is a good round brush, a hairdryer, and some texturizing spray for the ultimate ‘I woke up like this’ look.

So, as we move towards the end of the year and our inevitable breakup with 2020, it might not be the best time to jump straight into a new relationship or make a big hair change.
But a zero-commitment casual fling with curtain bangs may just do the trick.
