Among all the beauty dos and don’ts, there’s one thing we can be sure of: Going to sleep with wet hair can only result in morning terror. Frizz, kinks, and an otherwise unruly bedhead are guaranteed to get your morning off to a rough start. But if you really, really want (or need!) to shower and wash your hair before bed, read on. Expert hair stylists have come up with some easy tricks to turn wet hair at night into a gorgeous mane in the morning.

First of all, before actually doing anything with your hair, do something with your bedding, and get a silk or satin pillowcase. The ultra-smooth material will cause your hair to glide easily when you move around at night, reducing any chance of frizz. Plus, it feels luxurious.

Next, hair should be damp, not sopping wet when you go to bed. Celebrity hairstylist Creighton Bowman explains why. “You can’t sleep on totally wet hair. The problem is that there’s not always enough time to set your hair and allow it to dry by morning” (via Byrdie). So, let it air dry, or do a quick blow-dry to get it damp, not wet. Then, you’ve got several options.

A satin pillowcase can help reduce frizz

Try twisting hair up into a loose bun, and securing it with a scrunchie. Celebrity hairstylist Pamela Neal says, “Finger comb your hair up into a loose twisted bun at the crown and tie with a wide soft elastic tie. When you take it down in the morning, you will get a beautiful, shiny natural-looking, sexy bedhead look” (via Women’s Health).

Or, try braiding your damp hair to wake up to beachy waves in the morning. And, experiment with different types of braids for different effects. A french braid will give you all-over waves, while a loose, low braid will result in casual, beachy waves.

Applying the right product on damp hair before bed can also make a big difference. Hairstylist Kat Zemtsova recommends a plumping or texturizing mousse for straight hair, and a curl-boosting moisturizing product for wavy or curly hair. For highly textured hair, apply an intense moisturizing product specially formulated for textured hair (via Birchbox).
