While some might perform heroics to erase a scar from their body, or do everything in their power to hide them, Women’s Health Executive Editor Abby Cuffey flaunts hers—particularly the ones on her leg. She has a 5-inch scar from her knee down and marks around her ankle as a result of breaking her right tibia during a high school soccer game. She was rushed into emergency surgery, where doctors placed a titanium rod and two screws into the area to correct it. Though the screws were eventually removed, the rod itself—and scars on her knee and ankle from surgery—remained.

She looks to the marks as a reminder of just how strong she is. “The experience gave me a whole new appreciation for the power of your body,” she says. “It’s a part of me, but I do want to give my skin some TLC.”

She turns to Bio-Oil, a lightweight oil loaded with skin-nourishing vitamins and botanicals. New York City-based cosmetic biochemist Stacy Steinmetz says its use of lavender oil—which is known to help soothe skin—can help reduce a scar’s redness. She goes on to say that the rosemary oil in the formula can also help calm the area.

Now, whenever Cuffey glances at her scar, she’s reminded of what she overcame while healing—from feeling constant pain and using crutches at her graduation to making a total recovery and being able to return to long-distance running. “Anytime I’m not motivated to go for a run, the scar always makes me think back to those moments where I would have done anything to move easily or run without pain,” she says. “I’m grateful for it now.”
