Alison Hammond has struggled with her weight her whole life, attempting every diet going. The This Morning host said things came to a head recently, when she got a warning from her doctor.
It scared me… I want to be there for my son
The 46-year-old, who is a size 28, was told she was pre-diabetic following the second lockdown.
The presenter said this news made her worry that she wouldn’t be there for her teenage son, Aiden.
Alison’s mum had diabetes before her death in February last year, after battling liver and lung cancer.
The small screen favourite admitted being told she could develop the serious condition was a wake-up call.
Speaking in a new interview today, the Big Brother favourite said the pandemic had a “dire” effect on her weight.
But thanks to those doctor’s words, she quickly made some big lifestyle changes and is no longer pre-diabetic.
Alison had a gastric band fitted in 2014, which she then had to have removed after her body rejected it.
“I didn’t do very well with it,” she stated. “I was sick quite a lot and I don’t think mentally I was ready to have it.”
The mother-of-one went on to detail the warning she got just months ago, after being unable to curb her eating in lockdown.
She continued: “Lockdown was dire for me in terms of weight. I couldn’t control my eating or how much exercise I did.
“It got to a stage where my doctor said: ‘You’ve got to do something about this, Alison.'”
She had never had health issues until then and this news worried her.
She told The Sun: “It scared me because my mum had diabetes and I want to be there for my son.
“So I decided to do something about it. I go for walks and I cut out sugar.”
Alison added: “I feel a lot better. I’m not weighing myself, because you feel it in your clothes… I’m doing really well.”
The star shot to fame after competing in the third series of the reality show Big Brother in 2002.
She has since become a presenter and reporter on ITV’s This Morning and appeared in the likes of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! (2010), Strictly Come Dancing (2014), and Celebrity MasterChef (2014).
Alison fronts Friday’s edition of This Morning, after taking over from Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes.
She has a good relationship with her son’s father, Noureddine Boufaied.
The pair were previously engaged but he has since gone to marry and have three more children.
