“High point: I think I can swivel. Low point: Nadiya kneed me in the chin

Dan Walker

“Brilliant session learning the Charleston today”, the BBC Breakfast and BBC Sport presenter enthused in his Instagram post.

“[My partners] have put together such a fun routine with loads of lifts.”

“High point: I think I can swivel. Low point: Nadiya kneed me in the chin,” he joked, adding three laughter emojis to describe his feelings about the blunder.

“I am so sorry, partner,” an embarrassed Nadiya replied on his post.

Instagrammer annierundlewasbarrett quickly hit back by joking, “Better chin than groin,” and few could have disagreed.

Meanwhile jimmyjamesorr mischievously asked, “Anyone else trying to work out how Nadiya kneed Dan in the chin?”

Although it might have seemed as if Nadiya was the clumsier half of the duo, Dan has admitted to his own dance routine mishaps – most notably during the Strictly shows themselves.

He confessed on BBC Breakfast on Monday that the cane he used in his American Smooth routine had almost hurtled out of his hand and hit a woman in the audience.

“There was a man at the side of the stage and I was supposed to throw the cane to him, but I got a bit excited,” he laughed in conversation with co-presenter Sally Nugent.

“I flung it so far I nearly took out a woman in the back row.”

However the starstruck woman was completely nonplussed after potentially narrowly escaping injury.

“I went to apologise to [her] afterwards and she said it was OK because she had a claim to fame,” he joked.

Although Dan left his hosting role on Football Focus earlier this year, he continues his work at the BBC and has used the platform to share numerous anecdotes from his Strictly experiences.

His decision to stay at the channel was in contrast to BBC Breakfast co-presenter Louise Minchin, who felt compelled to leave the show after 20 years of enduring unsociable hours and “3.45am wake-up alarms”.

Dan has not been deterred by the lifestyle’s challenges and in fact, within months of quitting Football Focus, he had exchanged it for something even more intensive – seemingly non-stop dance rehearsals.

The announcement that he would be participating in the nineteenth series of Strictly prompted jokes from the public that he had stopped presenting the sport show to become a type of sportsman himself.

Although he has encountered his fair share of drama, including a backlash from angry fans when Dragons’ Den star Sara Davies was voted off while he sailed through to the eighth week of the competition, he remains in high spirits.

“Can’t wait for this weekend!” he enthused.

Fans can catch Dan, Nadiya and the other stars’ antics on Strictly Come Dancing on BBC One this weekend.
