Piers Morgan has recently filmed his final Life Stories for ITV with his good friend and former colleague Kate Garraway. Detailing the process of filming, Piers opened up about the amazing encounter he had with her husband Derek Draper.

As those following Kate’s story will know, her husband Derek has been suffering from the aftereffects of Covid.

He was first diagnosed with the illness back in March 2020 and he was soon placed in an induced coma.

Earlier this year, he was allowed to come home, where he receives almost constant care.

However, Kate has shared how he still struggles with speaking and communicating.

In his latest column for the Daily Mail, Piers shared how remarkable it was then to speak to him recently.

He recalled calling Kate up ahead of them filming Life Stories and asking how Derek was.

His good friend then asked him if he’d like to speak to Derek himself.

A “stunned” Piers shared how this would mark the first time since he was at Piers’ Christmas party back in December 2019.

Piers said: “‘Derek!’ I cried. ‘It’s so good to talk to you!’

“There was a slight pause and then I heard a familiar male voice say very clearly and strongly: ‘Hello!’

“I was stunned, again. ‘HELLO!’ I stammered back. ‘It’s great to hear your voice again. Keep battling, Derek – we’re all so proud of you!’

“There was another pause, then I heard him say the words ‘Thank you’ – again, very clearly.

“It was a strange, thrilling experience. There have been many times when I feared I’d never hear Derek speak again.”

Following the interaction, Kate shared how she couldn’t believe it as it was rare for Derek to have such an interaction.

Piers said he and Kate “looked at each other and went ‘WOW!’ again, in unison.”

He added: “I saw real excitement on Kate’s face. And hope.”

Their Life Stories chat will be broadcast on ITV on Sunday, December 5.

Susanna Reid shared a first look at it on Instagram recently as he posted a snap of them in the studio.

Alongside this, she wrote: “So moved to be in the audience for @piersmorgan final #LifeStories with our wonderful friend @kategarraway which was emotional and uplifting.”

Piers also shared a snap of him walking into the studio for the final time, writing: “Here we go… the final walk into other people’s shame #LifeStories.”

The outspoken broadcaster will hand the reins of his programme over to Kate as he leaves it behind after 12 years.

He’ll be fronting a TalkTV channel programme, which is due to be launched by Rupert Murdoch next year.

Kate is said to be presenting three new episodes of Life Stories following his exit.
