SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: Ellie Goulding had therapy as she secretly battled severe anger issues
Ellie Goulding, pictured at The Fashion Awards held in London last night, now admits she secretly struggles with severe anger issues
Royal favourite Ellie Goulding, who sang at the wedding reception of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, might be famed for her soft, ethereal music, but the pop star now admits she secretly struggles with severe anger issues.
‘I used to be much more irrational. I’ve had a lot of therapy and now I try to listen to people rather than talking all the time,’ explains the Love Me Like You Do singer.
‘I don’t come across as an angry person, but it’s definitely something I’ve had to work on for a long time.’
The 32-year-old, who wed Old Etonian art dealer Caspar Jopling, 27, at York Minster in August, where guests included the Duchess of York and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, praises her husband for his soothing effect.
‘When I met Caspar, this anger thing just went away. At first it didn’t. I did that thing when you first meet someone you really like and you don’t show any of your bad traits.
‘I’d sit with my legs crossed and be really tidy and not swear. Now I’ve got a ring on it, I do whatever I want! But because he’s such a calm person, he helped me see things in a different way. With Caspar I instantly felt calmer.’
Ellie, who grew up in a council house in Herefordshire and whose father, Arthur, walked out on the family when she was five years old — they later reunited in 2016 — claims the origin of her anger lies in her early years.

‘I’ve had family stuff and I’ve had stuff in my personal life which probably made this anger get worse and worse. Therapy has helped me to get rid of things.
Another form of letting go, Ellie says in the Happy Place Podcast with Fearne Cotton, is boxing.
‘Suppressing anger doesn’t work. It is nothing to be ashamed of. Everyone gets angry, it’s just about how you deal with it.’

The 19-year-old Iris Law has now discovered that less is definitely more
Iris Law is clearly the belle of the ball
Burberry beauty campaign star Iris Law makes a fortune modelling make-up for the luxury fashion house, but the 19-year-old has now discovered that less is definitely more.
The daughter of actor Jude Law and his ex-wife Sadie Frost recently documented her battle with facial acne on social media, but was the belle of the ball at the LOVE magazine Christmas party in London at the weekend as she showed off a strikingly clear complexion.
‘Obviously, my skin isn’t completely better, but it’s improved so much because I just stopped using too many things on my face,’ she explained.
‘I just used a really simple wash and a moisturiser and it cleared up.’
Sir Anthony Hopkins is fending off the Oscars buzz around his portrayal of Pope Benedict XVI in new movie The Two Popes.
‘My philosophy is: Ask nothing, expect nothing but accept everything,’ says the 81-year-old actor. Wisdom worthy of a pontiff, indeed. The Silence Of The Lambs Best Actor winner didn’t bury himself in research for the role.
‘It wasn’t difficult for me to play old because I am old. Acting for me has become dead easy.’

Known for her best-selling guide to punctuation, Eats, Shoots & Leaves, grammar queen Lynne Truss, still trying to resolve Britain’s apostrophe catastrophe, has been enjoying her switch to crime-writing.
‘I’m impressed by the sense of community,’ she says. ‘By contrast, the world of romantic novelists is rumoured to be rife with mutual loathing and backstabbing.
Maybe we crime writers just get all the venom out of our systems by committing violence while seated comfortably at our desks with steaming cups of tea within easy reach.
‘I worked out that in three years I’ve cheerfully slaughtered about 30 people. It’s incredibly easy once you start . . .’
City superwoman Dame Helena Morrissey is making waves as a fashion influencer
Helena’s tip: to get ahead, get a brooch
She is already tipped as the next Bank of England boss.
Now City superwoman Dame Helena Morrissey is making waves as a fashion influencer.
The 53-year-old mother-of-nine has started sharing pictures of her outfits on social media which she deconstructs for her followers.
Posting this snap of herself in a blue Oscar de la Renta outfit yesterday, she says: ‘Today, I need to wear a serious dress but navy needn’t be boring; striking brooches are a simple way to make a dress come to life.
‘I bought this one new about ten years ago — but look out for vintage costume pieces.
‘This is also my first go at stilettos since a small operation on my foot in April. I’ve learned to adapt when my body changes.’
Cara scared of parties! Who knew?
Model and actress Cara Delevingne might look like the life and soul of the party, but it’s a different story behind closed doors.
‘I usually get quite anxious about events and parties, because I overthink them,’ admits the 27-year-old.
‘Especially if I’m in the [make-up] chair and everyone else is busy working and I’m just sitting. I get in my head a lot. So I like to breathe deeply and feel my feet and feel my body, and do a little low hum.’
Romeo in love game
David and Victoria Beckham’s 17-year-old son, Romeo, is such a promising tennis player that he has faced British No.2 Kyle Edmund and trained with Andy Murray and Grigor Dimitrov.
However, siblings Brooklyn, Cruz and Harper, have lost interest in the game.
Tennis coach John Johnson tells me: ‘I’m [training] indoors now with just one Beckham — Romeo. The other boys weren’t that interested. I’ve trained Romeo for five years. Harper tried it, but she didn’t really like it.’
The Wire star Dominic West says the Baltimore TV cop drama could be revived for the stage.
‘I’ve always wanted to make a movie version, a bit like Sex And The City did,’ he tells me at the British Independent film awards.
‘The show’s creator said it would have to be a prequel if we did a movie and that we’d have to do that looking-younger thing, like in the Scorsese film, The Irishman. Maybe we can do a musical of The Wire, as I can sing like a charm, or a straight theatre version taking Baltimore to Broadway.’
Rock legend Steve Harley has outed himself as a closet Boris Johnson fan.
The 68-year-old front man of Cockney Rebel says: ‘He might be the greatest poseur of them all but it’s him and Brexit, or bankruptcy under sneering Marxist half-wits on the opposite benches.’
Harley, whose new album Uncovered is out early next year, adds: ‘Mind you, I’m not sure that I trust any of them.’

Former Strictly dancer Kristina Rihanoff tried to convert partner Ben Cohen to veganism after he was struck down with glandular fever — but the ex-England rugby star soon returned to his old habits.
‘He tried it with me for six months, then went back to eating everything,’ she tells me.
‘But we as a family are very heavily into veggies and fruit.’
Kristina, 41, who has a three-year-old daughter with Cohen, says he draws the line at vegan skincare.
‘He’s not into products,’ Kristina told me at the Essentiel Vie vegan skincare launch party.
‘He’s naturally gorgeous — he doesn’t need them. He just wakes up like that.’
