Susie Dent, 56, is the resident lexicographer on Countdown alongside host Nick Hewer, 77, and mathematician Rachel Riley, 35. The main show presenter stepped down from his role after a decade on the Channel 4 programme, with Anne Robinson, 77, announced as his replacement this week.
Susie has now shared the moment that she was “rescued” by Anne, even though the presenter could have “annihilated” her.
The Dictionary Corner favourite also opened up about her thoughts on Anne being apart of the longest-standing British quiz show.
Susie revealed that The Weakest Link presenter recently came to her rescue, after she missed a question on another programme.
Speaking with Jenny Kleeman and Luke Jones on Times Radio today, the latter quizzed the Countdown favourite about Anne and questioned if she was “petrified” about her joining the Channel 4 show.
He queried: “Twitter and TikTok have been alight with clips of her absolutely monstering people on The Weakest Link and being incredibly vicious.
“I wonder, are you petrified?”
Susie replied: “Do you know what? I will always be grateful to Anne because she rescued me on my first voyage into live telly, on a programme she did called Test The Nation.
“I was an expert along with John Humphreys on the English language.”
She continued “I was so nervous. I got through the first question and then thought, ‘OK, I’ve done it.’
“I completely missed the next question. Anne could have annihilated me but she didn’t.
“She repeated the question to me very gently. So, I’ll always be grateful to her for that.”
Susie addressed the latest addition to the Countdown line-up and admitted she planned to “up my game”.

“I don’t think our programme with Anne hosting will be anything like The Weakest Link persona,” the Countdown star commented.
“Apparently, she’s a great crossword puzzler as well. She can be quite competitive.
“I may have to up my game a little bit.”
Announcing the news on Steph’s Packed Lunch programme, Anne said that she’s “beyond thrilled” to be hosting Countdown and joked that “the show is almost as old as [she is] and just as historic”.
The former Watchdog presenter will join Susie and Rachel – who will continue to cover dictionary corner and the numbers respectively – with the pair being branded “formidable women” by Anne.
Nick has since broken his silence on his replacement and wished the former Weakest Link host the best.
“It’ll be very interesting. [Anne’s] a hugely professional presenter so I’m sure it’ll all go swimmingly well,” he told Entertainment Daily.
“I don’t know her to be honest. I’ve never met her. But I think she could teach me quite a lot and I’m not sure the reverse is true. The magic is in the format.”
Countdown airs weekdays on Channel 4 at 2.10pm.
