It was the awkward conversation heard around the world. By now, you’ve probably seen the very uncomfortable exchange between Ellen DeGeneres and actress Dakota Johnson on a recent episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
During the exchange, DeGeneres laid into Johnson for not inviting her to her birthday party. Johnson insisted that she did invite the talkshow host but she just didn’t come. Though it was a situation that we all have inevitably been in, in one form or another, it was extremely uncomfortable to watch.
So, what was so important that DeGeneres had to miss Johnson’s birthday party?
What happened between Ellen DeGeneres and Dakota Johnson
While Johnson was visiting The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Degeneres wished Johnson a happy belated birthday.
“How was the party? I wasn’t invited,” DeGeneres asked.
“Actually, no, that’s not the truth, Ellen,” Dakota responded. “You were invited.”
“Last time I was on the show, last year, you gave me a bunch of s–t about not inviting you but I didn’t even know you wanted to be invited,” she continued.
“Well, who doesn’t want to be invited to a party?” DeGeneres asked.
And that’s when things got really awkward.
“Well, I didn’t know you liked me,” Dakota laughed.
“Of course I like you. You knew I liked you,” DeGeneres said. “You’ve been on the show many times and don’t I show you…like.”
“But I did invite you and you didn’t come,” Dakota persisted.
Eventually, members of the crew confirmed that DeGeneres was, in fact, invited to the party but didn’t attend because she was out of town.
“Oh yeah, I had a thing,’” DeGeneres said.
Where was Ellen DeGeneres?
So, what was this thing that DeGeneres had to do that caused her to miss Johnson’s birthday party?
After hearing DeGeneres’ vague answer about where she was during Johnson’s party, fans did some sleuthing to figure out what the star was doing on that day.
They discovered that that was the weekend that DeGeneres had made headlines for hanging out with former President George W. Bush at a Dallas Cowboys game.
DeGeneres received so much backlash from the outing that she probably wished she had gone to Johnson’s birthday party instead.
“Here’s the thing, I’m friends with George Bush,” she said on the show after fans began bashing her. “In fact, I’m friends with a lot of people who don’t share the same beliefs that I have. We’re all different, and I think that we’ve forgotten that that’s OK that we’re all different.”
Ever since the encounter between DeGeneres and Johnson went viral, fans have been absolutely stanning Johnson.
“I can’t believe after years of Dakota Johnson being mocked for being in the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ series all it took was her ‘calling out’ Ellen DeGeneres for people to realize how iconic she is,” one person tweeted.
“My favorite thing about that video with Dakota Johnson and Ellen DeGeneres is that Dakota speaks in this really sweet, delicate intonation and giggles like a well-mannered schoolgirl as she obliterates Ellen,” another person wrote.
“Dakota Johnson calling out Ellen Degeneres on her b—s–t will absolutely carry me through the rest of this decade,” one user said.
