Sourcing a spooky Halloween costume should be fun and exciting but after the year we’ve had it can feel more like a chore.
“After 18 months of continual restrictions and some of the toughest lockdowns in the world, many Australians are tired, and a little bit lazy,” says Andrea Beattie, the founder of Hallozween, a magazine dedicated to growing the annual tradition locally.
But your outfit doesn’t have to require effort (unless you want it to). There are plenty of pop culture-centric costumes to be created from items you likely already have in your home. Ahead, we’ll show you how.
Park Hae-soo and Lee Jung-jae in Squid Game.
Tracksuits and loungewear have been on high rotation over the past 18 months, so crafting a costume inspired by Netflix’s nightmarish new series is for the person who rarely goes the full-hog or the parent who drew the short straw on trick-or-treating duty.
“Squid Game may be the easiest costume to fashion this year as all you need is a green tracksuit with a number painted on it and you’re done,” says Beattie.
“Fake blood spatter and head wounds are of course optional, but feel free to finesse your look with a little help from red lipstick, paint or a coloured marker for full effect.”

With the release of No Time To Die finally locked in after almost four years of delays, there’s no more suave a spy to dress this Halloween than 007 himself.
Transforming into James Bond is a relatively simple Halloween costume, with the look easy to achieve through plucking your best suit and tie from the back of the wardrobe. It’s likely been neglected for most of the year, so use this as an excuse to dress up whilst nailing the costume brief.

For those seeking to emulate a superhero this October 31, why not action a twist on the classic option by taking a cue from WandaVision?
“In the show, the character Vision wore his original green costume from the comics, and it’s an easy look to replicate,” says Beattie.
“For this, you will need green tights or leggings, worn with yellow shorts over the top, a green hoodie pulled down tight, a cape (perhaps fashioned out of a yellow tablecloth or towel), red face paint and boom.”

Ted Lasso is the perfect hero to worship for Halloween and the best part is, all you need is a puffer jacket and chinos and [should that be ‘or’?] a simple tracksuit.
For basic Ted, think blue with optional red stripes and a sun visor. If you want to up the style, go for the blue puffer/V-neck sweater, a chambray shirt, chinos and sneakers.
Don’t forget a fake moustache (drawn on or purchased), coiffe, Kansas drawl and some homemade biscuits to hand out.

For the 2021 version of the cult classic, there are a few approaches you can take.
For one, channel your inner LeBron James by donning basketball shorts and a baggy exercise tank. Finish off your look with a pair of sneakers and ensure you have a basketball with you at all times.
If you’re feeling particularly creative, Bugs Bunny may be more your style. Craft some bunny ears and a tail with card paper and fasten the ears to a headband and the tail to the back of a belt. Carry a carrot and basketball and you’re ready, Doc.

Mare of Easttown
It was hard to not be swept up in the storyline that was Mare of Easttown, with the inimitable Kate Winslet fronting the undulating series.
To pay homage to Winslet’s character, Beattie says a less-is-more approach is key.
“For simple yet effective emulation of Mare of Easttown this Halloween, throw on a scraggy overcoat, leave your hair unwashed for a few days and carry a vape pen as your go-to accessory. Ensure you’re free of make-up to seal the look.”
