Have you ever felt as if there’s bad energy at home or something feels off? Cleansing your home of bad vibes is a great idea when you need a fresh start or feel like you need to clear the air. Express.co.uk chatted to feng shui expert Marites Allen (@maritesallen on Instagram) and Interior expert Kelly Bassett (@ktheinteriorwarrior on Instagram) to find out how to cleanse your home of bad energy, from smoke smudging to chimes and more.

In the same way that we clean physical dust and dirt in our home spaces, we also need to do space cleansing on the energy level.

Marites explained: “Just like dirt, these stale energies have a way of accumulating in the home – though they are invisible — as a result of our daily activities.

“They seep into our space constantly. Unless we periodically cleanse those negative energies, they will contribute to blockages that may render it difficult for some of our life goals and good intentions to manifest.

“Removing negative energy from our spaces can help restore balance.”

So how do you know if your home is full of bad energy? Apparently, a telltale sign is unexplained insect infestation.

Marites said: “Especially if you are very careful in keeping your surroundings clean, the sudden appearance of rats or roaches could signify negative energy lurking around. Do space cleaning right away.”

Frequent arguments among household members can also attract negative vibes, Marites added.

Bad energy might not be limited to just one room – it could be all over your house!

There might not be a clear reason why it’s there, Marites warned: “Just pay attention to your feelings when you are in certain parts of the house.

“If you feel uncomfortable, too emotional or constantly drained for extended periods, or when things seem to go wrong all the time – these are signs, too.”

How to cleanse your home of bad energy

According to Marites, deep space cleansing is a must at least once a year, preferably before the start of the Chinese New Year.

However, she said: “You may also do it as often as you can, especially during negative events in your life—such as relationship breakups, or whenever you feel something does not feel right.

“If you are moving into a house that was occupied by people who might have unfortunate experiences there, do a thorough energy clearing.”

One way of warding off bad energy is to keep the home entrance clean and pleasant to allow fresh energies to enter.

Marites explained: “Keep entrances clutter-free; displaying a Pair of Fu Dogs at the entrance is symbolic of having protective guardians that deflect negative energy from coming inside.

“Especially during the Hungry Ghost Month of each year when the restless souls of the dead are believed to roam the earth, performing an incense ritual is highly recommended.

“Chimes, bells, and singing bowls create melodious sounds that drive away negative energy from dwelling in your home.”

Another popular way of clearing bad energy from a room or the whole house is by burning dried sage.

Interiors expert Kelly said she uses smudging at home to “cleanse the space from any impurities and negative energy, whilst also helping to neutralise dust and pollution.”

She added: “It is a great way to clear the air and bring in something new if you’ve just moved in, before and after you have had guests, after an argument, or if someone in the home has been ill.”

Kelly talked us through smudging, step by step.

Step one

Light the end of a sage bundle with a match. Once alight, blow out the flame. The tips of the leaves should smoulder slowly, releasing a very faint smoke.

Step two

Direct the sage bundle around the whole of your room, reaching into the corners. Have a ceramic bowl on hand to catch any ash, should it fall.

Allow the incense to linger in the room before moving on to the next.

Step three

Whilst cleansing the room with the sage you can set an intention.

Kelly said: “It can be something like ‘I intend to create a happy and loving home’, ‘I intend to create a calm and happy space’, ‘I intend to create a fun home’, or ‘I intend to sleep well in this room’.”

Step four

When you have finished with your rooms, place the end of the sage bundle in some sand or in some water to be sure that it has extinguished fully.

Allow the air to settle and then either light your candle or put on your diffuser.
