There is a new frontrunner in the list of potential names that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will call their baby daughter, and it might just surprise you.

While many royal commentators previously thought that ‘Diana’ would be a shoo-in as the favourite – there has now been a U-turn at the bookies.

Following the recent death of the Duke of Cambridge, sources close to the royals now believe that the name may pay tribute to the late Prince Philip.

Ladbrokes has placed the best odds on the child’s name, featuring some variant of Philip or Phillipa in her title – so as a first name or a middle name.

The odds on Philippa have been slashed to 3/1, while Diana, after Prince Harry's mother, is 5/1 and Elizabeth, in honour of the Queen, is 10/1.

Harry is known to have shared a particularly close bond with his grandfather, which shone out of the touching tribute he wrote following the Duke’s death.

He thanked him for his 'dedication to Granny', saying the Duke of Edinburgh will always "hold a special place in the hearts of Meghan, Archie and I (as well as your future great-granddaughter)" perhaps hinting that they will honour Philip with her name.

Harry signed off his statement, 'Per Mare, Per Terram', which translates to 'by land, by sea' – a nod to both his and his grandfather's shared military backgrounds.

However, Harry and Meghan wouldn't be the first of the grandchildren to opt for the name.

Princess Eugenie and husband Jack Brooksbank, who married in October 2018, named their first child, a son born in February, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.

A month later, her cousin Zara Tindall and her husband Mike welcomed Lucas Philip Tindall.

Jessica O'Reilly of Ladbrokes said: “Royal fans are increasingly hopeful that Harry and Meghan will name their daughter Philippa, and we've been forced to cut the odds accordingly as it's the only name punters are backing right now.”

She added: “It certainly wouldn't be a huge surprise if Diana is used, though it seems more likely it will be a middle name. Elizabeth is also proving a popular bet, with royalists thinking it could be an olive branch from the couple to Her Majesty.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced that they were expecting their second child on Valentine’s Day, and it’s believed the baby will arrive later this summer.
