For many people working from home has been the new normal for the past year, becoming custom to the weekly Zoom meetings and at-home distractions we learn to avoid.

Some bless the working at home lifestyle and others may curse – personal preference and work style is a big contributor to this.

With a summer heatwave underway, it can be hard to stay focused working from home when we don’t have the luxury of air-conditioned, open office space.

So we’ve put together the best ways to work from home during a heatwave to allow you to have a productive and comfortable working day.

Wear loose clothing

The joy of working from home means you don’t need to wear work attire. You can dress and wear whatever you wish whilst in the comfort of your own home.

Of course, if you know you have an important Zoom meeting, make sure at least your top half is still professional, allowing you to wear something more comfortable on the bottom.

During the hot weather choose to wear loose-fitting clothing to make for a comfortable working day, such as shorts or vest tops.

Freeze water bottles

Another highlight of working from home is the luxury of having your own fridge and freezer nearby.

This means continuously frozen bottles of water and ice cubes are easily accessible to help cool you down throughout the day.

Replace these as the day goes on so you have a constant supply when you need it.

Another tip is to freeze a hot water bottle as you would in winter, this will give you something to cool you down either on your tummy, feet or back if you’re feeling particularly hot.

Drink plenty of water

As the weather is warmer our bodies will require more water to help keep us hydrated throughout the day.

The recommended intake of water is between six to eight glasses a day, although on hot days this should increase.

Drinking water regularly throughout the day will help keep you hydrated and cool at the same time.

Hot drinks involving caffeine, such as our coffees and teas can raise our body’s temperature, try swapping your afternoon coffee for ice-cold water or juice instead.

Change your set-up

If you’re able to, change up where you usually work moving yourself to a much cooler area in your home.

Depending on your work set up you may not be able too but if you use a laptop to work choose a comfortable but still practical spot in your home that will help you keep cool for the day.

If possible, move your work outside. Find a shady spot in the garden, grab an extension cable and take your laptop outside where you can enjoy the weather and work, all at the same time.

Avoid unnecessary heat

Avoid sitting with your laptop on your lap, this can build heat up quickly as your laptop continues to work, building heat on your legs.

Turning off chargers that are not needed can also help reduce unnecessary heat building up and increasing the rooms temperatures.

Keep the sun out

In order to keep your home cool, it is best to keep the sun out by closing curtains or blinds.

Keeping them closed throughout the day will stop heat from building up from the sun and will allow your home to stay cool.

Keeping your windows closed during the day with the curtains drawn will also help to reduce heat from building up in your home.

The best time to open windows for some fresh air is during the cooler times of the day, this will help bring in cooler air rather than hot air.

Grab a fan

We may not have air conditioning but that doesn’t stop us from using our imaginations to make our own air-con.

Using a fan, position it next to where you work and grab a frozen bottle of water or an ice-cold glass of water, placing it in front of the fan, this will help blow cold air out rather than hot air continuously circling.

Just be sure to turn the fan off if you have to log in to a meeting!

Pulse points

A quick and easy way to cool yourself down without needing to jump in a cold shower is to cool your pulse points down on your wrists.

Running both wrists under a cold water tap can provide the sensation of feeling cool instantly.

Other pulse areas are on the neck, chest and temples which are also good spots to help cool you down. Grab an ice pack or frozen water bottle for these pulse points to hold against them.

Remove socks and slippers

Most of us enjoy the comfort of a pair of socks or slippers when working from home but these naturally become very hot, very quickly, particularly during a heatwave.

Our hands and feet regulate our core temperature, so removing those socks will instantly make you feel much cooler.
