Founding Blink-182 members Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus are in a great place after “repairing” their years-long friendship, with Hoppus’ cancer diagnosis serving as the catalyst for their renewed bond.
“The way the universe works is strange because I reached out to Mark because I needed him to sign this piece of paper that had to do with my divorce,” DeLonge, 45, revealed during a recent interview with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe.
“Only because of that call did I learn he had cancer,” DeLonge said of Hoppus, 49. “And he told me on the phone. I was like, ‘Wait, what?’”
DeLonge — who left the band in 2015 — admitted that he and his Blink-182 brethren hadn’t been “talking much at all,” over recent years, but have grown closer in support of Hoppus’ cancer battle.
“We weren’t really talking much at all, maybe once every couple of months, a little text here and there. But now, we talk multiple times a day,” DeLonge explained. “We’ve been able to completely repair that friendship and really cut to the depth of who we are as people and what this is all about.”
Both DeLonge and drummer Travis Barker came out in support of their bandmate when Hoppus revealed he was diagnosed with stage 4 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma to fans back in June.
“Mark is my brother and I love and support him,” Barker, 45, said in a statement to E! News. “I will be with him every step of the way on stage and off and can’t wait for us to play together again soon.”
“I too, have been aware of @markhoppus’s cancer diagnosis for awhile now,” DeLonge, tweeted soon after. “And to add to his own words that he used today, I would also like to say that he is strong, and a super-human who is pushing through this difficult obstacle with a wide-open heart,” adding the hashtag #WeHaveHisBack.”
