President Donald Trump will be visiting the U.K. soon for a State Visit, meeting with the royal family, including Prince Harry and possibly Prince William. Many royal fans wonder if Trump’s past creepy comments about their mother, Princess Diana, will make for an awkward visit, however.
What Did Donald Trump say about Princess Diana?
During a 1997 interview with Howard Stern, Trump was asked about Princess Diana, who had passed away that year in a tragic Paris car crash. Trump claimed that she was attracted to him and, when asked if he thought he could have “nailed” her, he said he “could have.”
Stern asked: “Why do people think it’s egotistical of you tosay you could’ve gotten Lady Di? You could’ve gotten her, right? You could’venailed her.”
Trump responded: “I think I could have,” adding, “She wasactually really beautiful. I thought she was supermodel beautiful.”
He continued, “She had times when she didn’t look great andshe had times when she looked better than anyone in the world. But she had theheight, she had magnificent skin, she was a great beauty.”
Trump also claimed that if Princess Diana had “been dating him” instead of Dodi Fayed, she wouldn’t have died in the fatal crash.
He shared, “I know that tunnel in Paris. It’s got, like, a 30-mile limit. If you look at this tunnel — and I really know that tunnel well, I’ve been through that tunnel many times — you can’t go more than like 30, 40 miles.”
Trump reportedly gave Princess Diana ‘the creeps’
Princess Diana didn’t find Trump all that charming, it turnsout, despite his boastful claims that he believed he could have had sex withher.
Trump reportedly pursued Diana when her marriage broke up, with broadcaster Selina Scott sharing in the Sunday Times in 2015 that he borderline was “stalking her” because he thought he “had a shot” at winning her over.
Scott wrote: ‘He bombarded Diana at Kensington Palace withmassive bouquets, each worth hundreds of pounds.” She described, “They wereaccompanied by handwritten notes expressing sympathy, his great regard for herand the suggestion that they get together.”
She added: “Trump clearly saw Diana as the ultimate trophywife. As the roses and orchids piled up at her apartment she becameincreasingly concerned about what she should do. It had begun to feel as ifTrump was stalking her.”
Scott noted that she became close to Diana after meeting herin the 1980s and Diana had said of Trump, ‘“What am I going to do? He gives methe creeps.”’
Trump wrote about Princess Diana in his book
Scott further noted, “When she died in the tragic accident in Paris in 1997 Trump told friends his biggest regret was that they hadn’t dated. He said that he always thought he had a chance of romance and would have had a ‘shot’ with her.”
Indeed, in his 1997 book, The Art of the Comeback, Trump wrote: “I only have one regret in the women department — that I never had the opportunity to court Lady Diana Spencer.”
He shared: “I met her on a number of occasions. I couldn’t help but notice how she moved people. She lit up the room with her charm, her presence. She was a genuine princess — a dream lady.”
His spokesman told the Sunday Times at the time: “They had a great relationship, liked each other a lot, but nothing ever came of it.”
Royal biographer Christopher Anderson told The Daily Beast in 2017 that, in light of the comments Trump made about Princess Diana, the Royals aren’t impressed, sharing: “When it comes to the younger royals, especially given his crude comments about Diana after her death, it is hard to imagine that Charles, William, Harry and Kate will view Trump as anything but crass and overbearing.”
