Mountaineer warns of inexperienced climbers causing Everest deaths

‘You are walking over bodies’: British mountaineer reveals how climbing Everest is deadlier than ever thanks to ‘complete beginners’ who cause fatal delays

  • Mounting death toll on world’s highest peak as record number of climbers attempt perilous route
  • Seasoned mountaineer rejects calls for cap on numbers, saying what is needed is greater checks on mountaineering experience
  • Deaths occur when inexperienced climbers get into trouble leading to a backlog and others running out of oxygen

A seasoned British mountaineer has said that the number of people with insufficient experience has led to rising numbers of deaths on Mount Everest.

Nick Hollis, 45, has recently returned from climbing the world’s highest peak and said that the climb was made harder by the fact the route to the summit was filled with people lacking experience of mountaineering.

This year alone there have been 11 fatalities (nine on the Nepalese side and two on the Tibetan) as increasing numbers of tourists try to conquer the world’s tallest mountain.

Mr Hollis said: ‘What I hadn’t expected to see was so many bodies of climbers who’d died either that day or the day before.

‘It’s no exaggeration to say you are walking over bodies.’

Crowded: a recent picture showing the increasing number of people attempting to climb Mount Everest, if those making the climb lack experience, it can be fatal

By successfully climbing Everest, Mr Hollis joins an elite group who have been to the top of the highest mountain on each continent.

Although the Nepalese Government limits the number of people who can attempt the climb each year through a permit system, Hollis believes the main problem is that many of those attempting it lack the experience to do so.

Upon reaching base camp, Hollis was struck by the number of climbers who lacked basic climbing skills such as using crampons and and securing a harnesses, who’ve been encouraged by unscrupulous tour companies.

He said: ‘These people are complete beginners.

‘When the going gets tough … they become very slow and they’re unable to get through the obstacles and the more technical sections. That’s what creates the bottlenecks.’

With oxygen supplies limited, delays can be deadly.

Furthermore he doesn’t believe that restricting the number of people allowed on the mountain will make a difference.

Hollis said: ‘If you were to restrict the number of permits down to say 200, you could still have 100 incompetent climbers within that mix.’

Instead, he suggests a screening process whereby permits are allocated to potential climbers based on their experience.

At 8,850 meters, Mount Everest is the world’s highest mountain, Sir Edmund Hilary and his Sherpa Tenzing Norgay were the first humans to reach the summit in 1953.

This year, the Nepalese Government issued 381 permits (at a cost of $11,000 each) meaning once Sherpa and guide support was included, 800 people were attempting to reach the summit this year.

Pope changes Lord’s Prayer after criticising what it implied about God

Pope Francis has given the ancient Lord's Prayer an update – indicating that he felt followers of the Catholic faith had been led into mistranslation.

Devout Catholics will need to recycle their Bibles after the pontiff ordered the change to the line ending: "and lead us not into temptation."

Francis said it had been poorly translated and in its current form implied that followers could be tempted to sin by God.

The Pope changed the line to "do not let us fall into temptation" after it was approved by the General Assembly of the Episcopal Conference of Italy on May 22.

According to reports in the Catholic Press the Pope has said the wording of the verse is "not a good translation": "A father doesn't do that ['lead us not into temptation'], a father helps you to get up immediately,"

Francis said. "It's Satan who leads us into temptation, that's his department."

The latest interpretation of the ancient text is not without controversy – as some Catholics felt the Pope had overstepped his authority.

At the time the Pope indicated his support for the verse changes in 2017, key conservative evangelicals criticised the Pope's support for the revised version.

Philip F. Lawler, editor of Catholic World News summed up the opposition to the move in comments to the New York Times , saying that while the translation of the line “isn’t unreasonable,” if Francis actually intends to change the prayer, “it’s very upsetting” because it is so deeply ingrained for Catholics.

“Pope Francis has made a habit of saying things that throw people into confusion, and this is one of them,” he said. “It just makes you wonder, where does it stop, what’s up for grabs. It’s cumulative unease.”

President Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti announced the approval of the revised line.

It will appear in the third edition of the Messale Ramano, the liturgical book that contains the guiding texts for Mass in the Roman Catholic Church.

The key verse appears in the Book of Matthew (6:13) and has been the focus of expert research for decades, as some raised questions over the current translation in use.

French Catholics adopted the change in late 2017, and it was widely predicted Italian Catholics would follow suit.

Pope Francis signalled his support for the change that year, also giving an Italian Catholic TV channel his own interpretation of the line.

"Do not let me fall into temptation because it is I who fall, it is not God who throws me into temptation and then sees how I fell," he told TV2000.

The change to the verse does not affect Anglican or Protestant worshippers, who use different texts.

Church Militant reports that the changes in translation policy are backed by the Pope's 'Great Principle' (Magnum principium) in 201.

The Holy See has restored authority to bishops' conferences for translations, and called for translators to respect local languages over commitment to the Latin.

The Pope has also approved a revision of the Gloria, which will change from "peace on Earth to people of good will to "peace on Earth to people beloved by God."

Mayim Bialik getting rinsed by mum for being unemployed after Big Bang Theory

What’s life about after you’ve starred in The Big Bang Theory – aka the biggest sitcom on the planet?

Kaley Cuoco just announced the release date for her DC Universe series Harley Quinn, while Johnny Galecki is gearing up for the arrival of a beautiful baby boy… after admitting he wanted a girl.

For Mayim Bialik it’s getting on your hands and knees to scrub your mother’s bathroom and being rinsed by family for being unemployed.

The 43 year old, who starred as Amy Farrah for the majority of the longest-running sitcom of all time, gave fans an update on her days post The Big Bang Theory finale and, honestly, we can all relate.

Alongside a picture of herself in sweats and clinging onto nasty bathroom wipes, she wrote: ‘Well folks. What’s unemployment like? It’s like being a plumber for my mom. Her bathroom sink and tub hadn’t been cleaned out in years and she called on me to do it. I don’t mind getting my hands dirty and I LOVE fixing things.

‘But I didn’t need her “How much do you charge?” and “Send me an invoice” jokes as I removed hair and slime from the drains 😂 . Everything is fine now. #moms #madrespectforplumbers(Warning for the faint of heart: the last photo is pretty gross).’

It’s been three weeks since we waved The Big Bang Theory cast off with a teary goodbye, as Amy and Sheldon won their Nobel Prize, Leonard and Penny announced they were expecting their first child and Raj got dumped, but got to meet Sarah Michelle Gellar so, you know, he’s the real champ.

But it’s now been revealed the finale was much more poignant than we initially realised as the Leoldon time jump, which saw the pair mend a shattered atom, was actually a secret nod to the 139 and a half hours fans spent watching The Big Bang Theory and the hours its cast and crew devoted to making it.

The Big Bang Theory is available to stream on Netflix.

Vanessa Feltz calls out This Morning viewer on-air for ‘destroying’ marriage

Vanessa Feltz did not hold back on This Morning today, as she called out a viewer live on air after he phoned in for help on how to end his marriage.

The viewer posing as ‘Pete’ called in for relationship advice, after his marriage to his wife had reached what he believed was the end.

Pete confessed things fell apart with the mother of his two children, both aged under two, to the point of no return.

He’s even dating someone knew, claiming the bad relationship with his wife and “lack of intimacy” led to him moving on.

But Vanessa was having none of it, issuing some stern advice to the man as he asked her how he should leave his partner.

She reminded him he hadn’t been “forced” to start a new relationship while still with his wife, while adding she believed the wife had no blame.

Vanessa told him: “I don’t know about being forced to see someone else, you’ve decided to call time on this relationship even though you’re married and she’s the mother of your two children.

“This is all in your court, you’re making all these decisions. If you’re asking how to end it, well you’re doing well to destroy it aren’t you, in seeing somebody else and deciding you’re not in love with your wife anymore.

“So I suppose what you do is you come clean, you’re honest and the most important thing of all is you're as kind as you can possibly be.”

Vanessa added: “It doesn’t sound to me as if any of this is her fault. If your feelings have changed, you take responsibility. Be the best father you can and the best want to be ex-husband you can. Don’t lie anymore, don’t cheat on her, and be honest and be kind.”

Viewers raced to Twitter over the moment, with one fan commenting: “Love @VanessaOnAir  #thismorning straight to the point.”

Anther agreed: “Pete is getting destroyed on live television.”

This Morning airs weekdays and Sundays at 10:30am on ITV.

China’s top economists urge Beijing to carry on fighting the trade war

‘America WON’T be great again!’ China’s top economists say ‘bully’ Washington is shooting itself in the foot and urge Beijing ‘not to be afraid of fighting’ the intensifying trade war

  • Group of experts urged Beijing to stick to its guns in trade war with the U.S.
  • They said Washington’s sanctions and tariff hikes will harm its own economy
  • President Xi has turned to Putin for support after relations with Trump soured
  • Trump said today he would speak with Xi before making a decision on tariff hike
  • China and the U.S. have exchanged tariffs on $360 billion in two-way trade

China’s top economists have urged its government to stick to their guns and carry on fighting an intensifying trade war with the United States.

The group of experts claimed that Washington’s ‘bully’ behaviour ‘will not make America great again’, mocking the Trump administration by tweaking Donald’s famous slogan during his presidential campaign in 2016.

They said yesterday at a high-profile forum that Washington’s sanctions and tariff hikes would damage no one, but its own economy in the end.

The news comes as Beijing seeks to cosy up to Moscow during its tensions with Washington. President Xi yesterday hailed China and Russia’s ‘unprecedented’ ties during a three-day state visit to his neighbouring country.

A group of Beijing’s leading economists have told their government to stick its ground in an escalating trade war with the U.S. They claimed that Washington’s ‘bully’ behaviour ‘will not make America great again’, mocking the Trump administration by tweaking Donald’s slogan

Xi is on a three-day state visit to ‘best friend’ Putin as China and Russia are celebrating 70 years of diplomatic ties this year. Both nations face mounting political tensions with the U.S

The economists from state-affiliated think tank Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) condemned the U.S. for harming the order of global trade and bringing ‘severe challenge’ to the worldwide economy.

Wu Baiyi, director of the institute of American studies of CASS, said the U.S. is blaming China on issues that were caused by its own poor management as well as the Capitalist system, according to People’s Daily.

Another expert accused the U.S. of being a big liar. ‘To say that America is suffering loss because it has deficit in trade, this is a massive lie,’ condemned Li Yang, the former deputy director of CASS.

A third participant criticised the U.S. for breaking the global supply chain. Huang Qunhui, director of Institute of Industrial Economics of CASS, said the U.S. is harming the interests of everyone in a globalised economy.

Beijing also accused Washington of reneging on their promise during the trade war talks. The two side failed to reach an agreement on tariffs earlier last month. Xi and Trump are pictured in their bilateral meeting at the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 1, 2018

The experts also urged Beijing to stick its ground in the escalating political tensions because ‘China has sound reasons not to be afraid of fighting the trade war’.

U.S. President Trump said today he would make a decision about ramping up tariffs on China after speaking with Chinese President Xi Jinping at a summit this month in Japan.

Speaking Thursday in France, Trump said: ‘I will make that decision I would say over the next two weeks – probably right after the G-20.’ He was referring to a summit with the leaders of developed and developing countries.

The countries have exchanged tariffs on $360 billion in two-way trade so far in the trade war

Trump ordered tariffs of up to 25 per cent on hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of Chinese exports.

His administration is preparing to extend them to $300 billion (£236 billion) more – almost all items shipped to the U.S. from China.

Trump ordered the tariffs to pressure China to change its behavior.

China reciprocated by imposing new tariffs on 5,410 American products from June 1.

The tariffs, ranging from five percent to 25 per cent, impact various common items including condoms, perfume, wine, pianos, cordless phones, industrial robots, coffee and ovens.

The two nations, which are also the world’s two largest economies, failed to reach an agreement during their trade talks earlier last month.

They have exchanged tariffs on $360 billion (£285 billion) in two-way trade so far.

N.S. government terminates contract with Stock Transportation

The Nova Scotia government has terminated its contract with Stock Transportation.

Education Minister Zach Churchill announced Thursday that the Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE) will issue a Request for Proposals for a new busing contract.

The move will end the 10-year contract between Stock and the former Halifax Regional School Board.

The contract is currently in its third year. Stock Transportation will continue to operate in HRM in the coming school year and until a new contract is in place.

Churchill says the department sees a problem with the contract, as it “doesn’t allow them to provide adequate transportation for students.”

“When you don’t have competition, when you do have a monopoly that can impact service standards,” Churchill said.

“It’ll allow smaller providers to submit a proposal.”

HRCE will take over communication and routing in the region starting September 2020. A new provincial student transportation policy is also in development which is expected to be in place at that time.

Elwin Leroux, executive director of HRCE, says the contract was structured so that either party could give on-year notice to terminate without penalty.

“We actually want to change the foundaion on which this is built,” Leroux said.

“What we’ve said is this contract is not working.”

The province will now look for another company to take over the service.

High Ponytails: 15 Stars Rocking The Sleek Hairstyle For Spring – Pics

The one hair trend that all of the celebs have been rocking lately is the high ponytail & they just proved it’s the chicest look for spring.

Ponytails never go out of style, as they are the easiest way to just throw your hair up and leave the house. However, one specific style of the trend is the sleek high ponytail that a ton of stars have been rocking on red carpets. Jennifer Lopez, 49, looked gorgeous at the 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards on Monday, June 3, at the Brooklyn Museum in New York, when she rocked a bright orange Ralph Lauren outfit. While we loved her look, it was her hair that stole the show. JLo opted for a snatched ponytail with extra long hair, done by Color Wow Creative Director and Celebrity Hairstylist, Chris Appleton. Chris first spritzed her damp hair with Color Wow Dream Coat Anti-Humidity Hair Treatment to create a strong base and add shine, before blow drying the hair to create a smooth finish. Then, he added Hidden Crown Clip-ins in a clock work pattern at the back of the head in the same direction of the ponytail. Once that was done, he sprayed Color Wow Cult Favorite Firm + Flexible Hairspray in the roots of the hair and brushed it all into a pony tail. After that, he applied Color Wow Cult Favorite Firm + Flexible Hairspray onto a toothbrush and combed up to the hairline to remove any flyaways, before finishing the look by curling the hair in sections.

Another one of our fave ponytail looks was Hailey Baldwin’s, 22, feminine look at the 2019 Met Gala on May 6 in NYC. Hailey’s hair was done by Jen Atkin, who prepped her damp hair with OUAI Wave Spray before blow drying her hair using the Dyson Airwrap Styler. Then, she attached Luxy hair extensions for length and sprayed Rita Hazan Root Concealer in light brown to blend extensions. After that, she applied Tancho stick to roots and then used a barbers brush to mold into a ponytail. A little black Alexander Wang bow completed the look.

The Kardashians love a sleek high ponytail, and Kourtney, 40, just rocked one at the amfAR Gala in NYC back in February. Celebrity hairstylist, Andrew Fitzsimons created her flawless hairstyle for the event, by prepping her hair with NatureLab TOKYO Perfect Smooth Blowout Lotion, before blow drying it upside down to smooth the hair when it’s pulled into a high pony. Then, he flat ironed the ends to ensure the ponytail stays straight and sleek, before putting in BeautyWorks Invisi-Tape Hair Extensions at the back of her head to give the pony length without adding bulk. Once that was done, he sprayed a brush with RUSK W8less Plus Extra Strong Hold Shaping & Control Hairspray and pulled all of her hair into a high pony just in front of the crown, before securing the ponytail with a hair tie.

There have been so many other celebrities who have been rocking high ponytails in the coolest ways possible, which you can see when you click through the gallery above. From Kendall Jenner’s, 23, high ponytail with fresh new front bangs, to Gigi Hadid’s, 24, middle parted sleek pony with waves, there are so many amazing looks.
