Wayne Griffin, spokesman for Lafayette Police Department in Louisiana, US, said: "McMahon was allegedly involved in an incident where a vehicle was parked at a red light.

"He [McMahon] pulled up in his own vehicle next to the car. He shot into the car and then he sped off.

"We were able to locate the vehicle through some investigative means.

"And in turn we were able to locate him and make an arrest."

Griffin told TDN that no one in the line of fire got hurt and that the apparent targets of the shooting were 'fine'.

McMahon was pulled over by police on January 2 when officers found drugs.

It was then they also discovered two outstanding warrants issued on December 27, according to Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office.

McMahon – who was charged with attempted murder in the second degree – posted bond of just under £60,000.

The jockey has ridden 1,046 winners and earned more than £16.7million in prize money during a highly successful career.

McMahon last rode at the Delta Downs meet in the state on December 28.

Last year was his worst since 2014 – winning just 47 races from 391 mounts and earning just under £850,000.

In 2015 he was ranked the 11th best jockey in America having won 219 races.

And 2016 was his best financially after earning just under £3.7m on the track.

His best performances include claiming the 2016 Texas Mile Stakes, the Super Derby and Oklahoma Derby.

McMahon was previously suspended for 30 days by the Indiana Horse Racing Commission in 2017 for testing positive for methamphetamine and THC, a constituent of cannabis.
