Everyone knows about the passion for football fans in the north-east. There’s always plenty of banter flying around between the supporters of Newcastle United, Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

Newcastle are the top dogs in the region at present thanks to their Saudi-led takeover and excellent form under Eddie Howe over the second half of the season. But Sunderland look to be on the way back after several seasons in the wilderness, having won promotion back to the Championship via the League One play-offs. Meanwhile, Middlesbrough endured a tough end to their campaign as they missed out on a play-off place in the second tier.

There are likely to be fans of all three clubs at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena, which hosts the final night of the regular Premier League season tonight before the play-offs in Berlin next month. One of them will be Boro fan and former Premier League player Glen Durrant.

Ahead of the night, Durrant tweeted a clip of Geordie and Newcastle fan Chris Dobey’s memorable walk-on in Newcastle during the 2019 Premier League. Following Gary Anderson’s withdrawal from the competition that year, Dobey was drafted in as one of nine ‘contenders’ and drew 6-6 with Mensur Suijovic.

Durrant posted: “In Newcastle for the @OfficialPDC Premier League. Reminds me of that incredible @Dobey180 walk on. Watching at home was spine-tingling Off to The Metro Centre to shop #TheJoys.”

Dobey tweeted back “Enjoy it pal hope you don’t get too much stick, just wear your toon shirt I bought you, they’ll love it.”

Durrant promptly replied by posting a picture of a Newcastle shirt on a toilet seat, writing: “Sorted lad.”

On the final night before the play-offs, attention is focused on quarter-final between Joe Cullen, the winner in London last week, and Peter Wright, with the victor assured of a top-four finish and a place in Berlin along with Jonny Clayton, Michael van Gerwen and James Wade.
