TEAM GB stars must sign Tokyo Olympics legal waivers that mean they accept risk of catching or dying from Covid-19.

Forms sent out to all individuals involved in the Games – athletes, Chef de Missions and team officials – limit liability for the organisers should anyone suffer “loss, injury (or) infectious disease”.

The 12-page IOC document – entitled the Conditions of Participation for NOC Delegation Members – must be filled out before anyone can compete in the Japan Games.

Section four of the waiver reads: “I agree that I participate in the Games at my own risk and own responsibility.

“Including any impact on my participation to and/or performance in the Games, serious bodily injury or even death raised by the potential exposure to health hazards such the transmission of Covid-19 and other infectious disease or extreme heat conditions.”

Athletes must also acknowledge they will “take all reasonable measures to protect myself from the risks related to my participation”.

The Olympics were postponed by 12 months due to the Covid pandemic but infections rates have rocketed in Japan in recent months.

Capital Tokyo is under a state of emergency and many are starting to question whether the Games should go ahead, particularly when vaccination rates in the country are so low.

A series of restrictive Covid counter-measures will be in place in relation to travel, testing and participation.

These will fundamentally preclude social interactivity and close contact – a difficult task in a city where there are more than 37 million inhabitants.

The IOC told SunSport: “The safety and security of all persons attending the Games is the utmost priority of the IOC and Japanese organisers who are putting in place a comprehensive set of wide-ranging measures to mitigate all related risks.

“The entry forms have been actually in place for previous Games, and have been updated to include Covid-19 related considerations.

“This is really to provide transparency and ensures informed consent from the Games participants. In addition, the entry forms are consistent with standard practice of other big event organisers and the forms are within the framework of the law.”
