Coronation Street’s Colson Smith has said that he was ‘self-harming’ with food after being trolled over his weight when he was 11 years old.

The actor – who portrays Craig Tinker on the ITV soap – made the most of lockdown last year, as he embarked on a journey to lose weight.

He is set to release a short film documenting his transformation – entitled Bored Of Being The Fat Kid – next month, and ahead of its release he spoke openly about his experience.

‘At 11 years old I had a Twitter account,’ Colson, 22, told ‘You log in, you search your name, you search “Craig Corrie” and you’re looking to see what people are saying about your character or your acting, and all they’re saying is about your weight and the way you look.

‘I was being branded as just the fat kid from day one. Even at school I was always “the fat kid”, I was always the odd one out.’

‘I left my parents at 17 to live in Manchester, which was away from home and when everyone else was at uni, and they were having uni food, I’m sat on Deliveroo every night.

‘I got myself into a really unhealthy position. Food was a self harm to me like that, it was my comfort, and I didn’t realise how much damage I was doing to myself with it.’

‘I had a very bad relationship with food. It was negative, it was bingey.

‘It was probably a disorder, you know, it was self-harm.’

The soap star, who documented much of his weight loss journey on social media, said that he decided to lose weight as he wanted to live his life with ‘no regrets.’

‘I want to live my life with no regrets,’ he told us. ‘In my career, and in my social life. I never want to say: “Why didn’t I do that?”.

‘I kind of always want to look forward, so I guess the reason I tried to do it now was that it was right for me.

‘When lockdown started, I thought: ‘Well this is perfect, really, because this gives me a chance to concentrate on me. And for once to put myself first.’

Bored Of Being The Fat Kid will drop on Colson’s YouTube Channel on June 2. Catch the first trailer today at 10am.
