DEMI Lovato's ex Max Ehrich got "caught up in Hollywood" and the singer "didn't trust him" before she called off engagement.
Just yesterday, it was revealed that the two had split following a two-month engagement.
Multiple sources close to Demi, 28, revealed that Max, 29, apparently wasn't who really had shown himself to be and proved to be untrustworthy in the singer's eyes.
One source said their relationship "started going downhill" just before Max traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to film a new project.
"They were arguing a lot and Demi didn't want him to go without her," the source told E! News.
The Tell Me You Love Me singer did travel to George but because "there has been a lot of tension, Demi left him to get a clear head."
The source added that "she didn't know who Max truly was and didn't think he had good intentions.
"There were many red flags she was ignoring and trying to turn a blind eye to.
A second source told E! News: "She doesn't trust him and thinks he's sketchy."
The second source went on to explain that she "feels he proposed to get attention," as they got engaged just four months after they started dating originally.
The doubts Demi had about his intentions were likely intensified by the concerns of her mother and close friends, who the first source said were "warning" her about Max.
The first source explained that they believed it was "best" for Demi to end her relationship with the soap star "sooner than later."
The source added that there is no doubt that Demi "really loved him and wanted it to work."
"Demi is really upset and distraught about it," the source added.
The source added that Demi has officially kicked him out of her house as well and will be returning to Los Angeles, where her family has "rallied around her."
Other sources confirmed the issues that Demi and Max were having to PEOPLE with a third one revealing: "Demi and Max were basically together 24/7 for months.
"They lived in a bubble with zero stress, and everything was just fun. Now they are both working and are on separate coasts. They were having conflicts."
A fourth source agreed the distance "put a strain" on their relationship and said: "Max shot up in fame, and it's been hard. He got wrapped up in [Hollywood]."
Rumors around their engagement ending had been circulating since Demi's sister and bodyguard both unfollowed Max on social media.
The pair have also not liked or commented on each other's recent Instagram posts, after months of publicly gushing over each other.
Max, who stars on soap The Young and the Restless, was also criticized by fans for allegedly leaving thirsty messages on older posts by Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, and Ariana Grande.
However, Demi spoke up and claimed they had been forged, writing: "It’s really sad when people FAKE images to put women against each other."
What did Max Ehrich’s tweets to Selena Gomez say and were they fake?
Fans have shared screengrabs from 2018 that appear to be from Max's account.
One reads "I'm going to marry @SelenaGomez,"
Another is Max responding with heart-eyes and a laughing emoji to a tweet of a photo of Selena which says "Your wife."
One screengrab shows Max replying to professional boxer Ryan Garcia's tweet about marrying Selena, saying, "You'd have to fight me first."
As well as the tweets, fans have shared clips from one of Max's past Instagram Live streams, in which he reveals he had a crush on Selena.
It is difficult to confirm the tweets are real, because Max has deleted his Twitter account.
Demi and Max got engaged in late July, after five months of dating.
The 28-year-old singer announced the news in a series of sweet snaps of the couple kissing on a beach in Malibu at sunset.
Max also shared the sweet photos on Instagram and declared that he will "forever cherish" Demi's "pure, beautiful, infinite soul."
