The devastating Paul Ashdale and Vinny Dingle storyline came to a head on Emmerdale last night when Paul beat Vinny badly enough to leave him fighting for his life in hospital.

But keen-eyed fans spotted a potential blunder in Friday’s episode.

They noted that the police hadn’t turned up to the hospital as a matter of course to question him.

Ever the voice of reason, Liv asked in the episode: “Have you not tried calling the police? There might be CCTV.”

Paul replied in the negative.

Mandy backed him up to say she didn’t want the police involved.

But fans were insistent that in the incidence of a violent attack, the hospital would likely contact the police for them.

One said: “Has nobody called the police yet #Emmerdale, the hospital would have as a matter of routine.”

Another added: “And no police involved?”

Someone else penned: “Wouldn’t the hospital call the police about Vinny? Asking for a friend.”

One viewer wondered what Mandy was thinking: “Can Mandy not smell a rat, Liv says call the police and video cameras and he’s disagreeing with her, something that you would normally do if you’re attacked.”

One was also confused about the lack of visible bruises on Paul’s hands: “No bruises or marks on Paul’s hands,” one commented with an eye-roll emoji.

Later, Vinny woke up but looked terrified as dad Paul entered the room.

“We should never have split up like that – thank goodness we found you when we did!” Paul lied.

He encouraged Liv to leave Vinny’s hospital room so they could have some time alone – and, reluctantly, she agreed.

He attempted to explain the incident away, saying: “What happened yesterday, it were a moment of stupid booze-fuelled madness.

“It’s not as if you didn’t say some things yourself! Pressed them buttons that only you can get to – not that I’m using that as an excuse."

Paul again twisted Vinny’s words: “First two words to me and you’re already pointing the finger

“[Mandy] knows the truth I lose everything, is that what you really want?” he asked.

And as if his threats weren’t enough, Paul then attempted to guilt-trip Vinny.

He let Vinny in on the loved-up voicemail Mandy left while drunk at her hen 'do last night.

“This isn’t about her,” Vinny insisted.

“You’ll break her heart just as much as mine,” Paul replied.

“I just want it to stop,” Vinny said plaintively.

“And it will. As soon as this wedding’s over,” his dad insisted.

Thankfully, Liv took it upon herself to call the police by the end of the episode.

Emmerdale airs on weekdays at 7pm on ITV, with an extra helping on Thursdays at 8pm.
