It’s been several months since AMC’s epic zombie spin-off was last on screens, and fans were expecting big things from the midseason premiere of Fear the Walking Dead. Finally back to finish the rest of season six, viewers were thrown a curveball this week with the shocking death of one of the show’s most beloved characters.
The Walking Dead viewers were fuming after this week’s episode of the series’ first spin-off killed off fan favourite John Dorie (played by Garret Dillahunt).
First introduced in season four as a new companion for Morgan Jones (Lennie James), John has become a staple of Fear the Walking Dead’s return to form in recent years.
As with AMC’s flagship zombie series, the spin-off was expected to deliver some big moments in the highly anticipated midseason premiere.
However, the last thing fans were expecting to see was the unceremonial death of one of Fear’s biggest assets at this early stage of the new instalment.
Episode eight, ‘The Door’, started off with a bad omen for John Dorie, who seemed to be getting ready to succumb to his suicidal urges.
Once the action of the premiere got underway, fans were convinced he had escaped his fate for now, as Morgan and Dakota (Zoe Colletti) seemed to be lifting his spirits.
Unfortunately, things take a dark turn when John discovers it was Dakota who had killed Cameron (Noah Kyle), and she’s forced to defend herself.
After Dakota shoots him in the chest, John almost manages to save himself from drowning in the nearby river.
In spite of his efforts, his wife June (Jenna Elfman) rushes to meet him by the riverbank, only to discover he had already turned into a walker.
Many fans were left feeling cheated by Fear’s latest exercise in misdirect, with all signs pointing to John’s rehabilitation until he met his tragic demise in the closing moments of the new episode.
On Reddit, one fan raged: “There’s no f*****g way they kill off John??
“Of all the characters they can kill off for a finale death they choose JOHN DORIE? Arguably the character with the most potential and room to grow in the show?”

John Dorie’s tenure on the series was certainly short lived, but he has already succeeded in making a strong impression on the show’s most dedicated fans.
Moreover, much of the audience attributed Fear’s seeming rise in quality and popularity to John’s season four introduction, so to kill him off now, for some, felt premature.
Another fan commented: “I hope they make John’s death mean something, I’d hate for it to be for no reason other than a punch to the gut for fans.
“Overall I hate that John died, and personally I wouldn’t have picked him to be the one to die.”
Meanwhile, others noted similarities to the deaths of Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), which kicked off the original series’ seventh season.
A final fan said: “Even though I’m a diehard Walking Dead fan I contemplated for a second if I was even gonna keep watching!”
The series received similar comments during Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) infamous introduction.
Now John Dorie is no longer among the living, will Fear the Walking Dead be able to keep fans’ attention throughout the remainder of season six?
Fear the Walking Dead season 6 continues Sunday, April 28 on AMC.
