Leonardo is the new show on Amazon Prime Video focusing on the life and passions of Leonardo da Vinci. Aiden Turner has stepped in to reimagine this iconic figure from history. Express.co.uk spoke to series producer Luca Bernabei about Turner’s performance.

Leonardo dropped its entire debut season this week on April 16, with eight episodes diving into both Leonardo da Vinci’s private life and his famous work.

Aiden Turner, best known for his role in Poldark, leads a cast taking viewers back to 1400s Italy.

The actor brought to the role a younger, grittier side to the part than usual depictions portray.

The synopsis of the series says: “Recounting Leonardo da Vinci’s extraordinary life through the works that made him famous, through the stories hidden within those works, revealing little by little the inner torment of a man obsessed with attaining perfection.”

Why was Aiden Turner cast as Da Vinci?

Express.co.uk recently spoke with Luca Bernabei, the series producer and Lux Video CEO on why he wanted Aiden Turner for the part.

He said: “[Aiden] is an intelligent actor, he was searching for something complex and he is a complex actor and person.”

The show is exploring many different aspects of Leonardo’s life and looking at many of the nuances that are being debated by historians still to this day.

Bernabei continued: “We were searching for an intense-looking actor; we were looking for something that wouldn’t stop… so he was really good at expressing this.”

He added: “Leonardo belongs to the world and I am so pleased Aiden Turner, a marvellous actor, chose to make this project. He became lost in Italy in order to play this part.”

Turners time filming the series was disrupted, however, due to the coronavirus pandemic, which resulted in half of the series having to be shot inside Lux Vide’s studio, one of the largest in Europe.

Shooting resumed quickly, with the series adapting to the new coronavirus restrictions in order to complete the series.

The show has created a central murder mystery plot in order to explore the different aspects of Leonardo’s life.

The show has used historians to ensure authenticity for the audience, with the filmmakers hoping the show will inspire viewers to explore the history of da Vinci for themselves.

Speaking on Leonardo: The Official Podcast, Turner said before the role: “I had a loose grasp [of Leonardo da Vinci]… he has just always been there, the genius.”

The series will also focus on Leonardo’s sexuality, exploring an aspect of his life that is often not explored in fiction.

Turner added: “I don’t think it has ever been discussed in a drama to the best of my knowledge, ours is the first drama to really present that.”

Leonardo is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video from April 16.

The complete series is available on the platform, with all eight episodes being available.

Prime Video is available to subscribers for £7.99 a month or £79 annually
