Michael Owen has spoken out about daughter Gemma's stint on Love Island, after she came second in the show's finale.

The former footballer, 42, rarely made a comment on Gemma's journey on the ITV2 dating show, even deciding to give the 'meet the parents' episode a miss, which would have seen him making an appearance in the Majorcan villa.

Gemma's mum, Louise still took part, meeting up with Gemma in the villa, and Michael's recent comments on Twitter reflect the sentiments she shared on the show.

Michael shared a picture of himself with Gemma at a restaurant together, captioning it: "She's done us proud."

He also uploaded the same picture to Instagram, posting a lengthier caption, telling his "special girl" to "hurry up home".

While in the villa, Louise passed on a message to Gemma from Michael, saying: "Honestly, he is really proud of you, really proud."

When questioned on Sky Sports At The Races as to why he didn't take part in the 'meet the parents' episode of Love Island, he said: "My wife will do that duty. I'll represent the horses and she'll represent the daughter."

He added: "I don't know what I'll get from Box To Box. But I know what I'm going to get from my daughter. I've fathered her for 19 years so I'm pretty sure what I'm going to get from her."

However, Michael wasn't all that pleased about Gemma taking part in Love Island to begin with.

He told ITV at the time: "I have no doubts that she will make us all proud. It’s probably a father’s worst nightmare, but whatever she wants to do you’ve got to be supportive. I’ve heard a lot about it.

"I think old, grumpy men like me will always have an opinion on it because I don’t watch it and you just hear snippets, but she assures me it’s not as bad as I think."

"It's quite a big thing and whatever she wants to do, you have to be supportive and I think I've given her a decent enough grounding to be respectful".
