Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) is one of NCIS’ most prestigious characters, having been a pinnacle character since the show began in 2003. However, the end of season 18 was dramatic as ever but Gibbs’ fate was unknown after he was suspended and survived a boat explosion. But will Gibbs return to the team and hunt down the serial killer he has been investigating alone on the CBS show?

What happened to Gibbs at the end of NCIS season 18?

In the final episode of season 18, Gibbs had been let off the charges of assaulting the leader of a dogfighting ring.

This had led to his suspension from the team but Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) was willing to give his colleague another chance.

Unfortunately, this came with the condition he had to apologise for doing wrong and Gibbs was unwilling to do so.

Therefore, he agreed he would leave the team indefinitely but he and journalist Marcie Warren (Pam Dawber) began investigating a cold case off the record.

It’s not long before they realised they were in real danger as they discovered the killer they are tracking could’ve been on to them.

Before the closing credits rolled on the season 18 finale, it seemed the killer knew exactly what Gibbs was up to as his boat blew up with him on it.

Although it looked like Gibbs might have died, viewers spotted him swimming away from the carnage to safety.

However, having left his colleagues prior to starting this investigation, he will be continuing with his efforts solo when fans catch up with season 19.

Though, Gibbs has never been able to conduct a case alone so he will need some help to track down one clever, criminal mastermind.

Will Gibbs rejoin the team at NCIS?

Even though his fate seemed uncertain at the end of season 18, bosses have confirmed the beloved character will back to take the spotlight for more drama.

With reports the actor who plays Gibbs, Mark, was going to quit the show, boss Steven D Binder has shut down rumours and indicated what’s to come instead.

The showrunner explained in an interview with TV Line: “Gibbs has been hunting down this serial killer, and he’s doing it alone.

“He’s cut off from his team… but in the beginning episodes, that’s going to change,” he added, making it likely Gibbs will be brought back to his old role sooner than what was originally thought.

At the moment, it’s not known at what stage Gibbs will rejoin the team or who will be the person to realise he needs help.

According to an unnamed source speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor who plays Gibbs, Mark could be featuring in fewer episodes.

This is being reported due to a one-year contract he has reportedly signed to keep him on the show a little longer.

Another unnamed source told TV Line the number of appearances he will make will be in the “low single digits”.

With a good 15 to 20 episodes billed to play out this season, Gibbs could play a less significant role as new cast members join.

Gary Cole will be arriving in a “major” new role so he could be replacing Gibbs for the foreseeable future.

Nothing has been confirmed as of yet so viewers will have to keep their eyes peeled as the season gets off to a start on Monday 20 September, 2021.

The team will be on the search for Gibbs after the boat explosion but they could find him worse for wear after surviving the serial killer’s latest antics.

NCIS season 19 will premiere on Monday, September 20 on CBS.
