Neil Patrick Harris is a star with serious staying power. He has more than 100 acting credits to his name, but those credits would likely double or triple if you count up the number of times Harris has been mentioned in shows and movies without ever appearing. It probably isn’t easy for Harris to keep up with all of the namedrops, so it should come as no surprise that he had no idea that Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life referenced his famous family. Once he found out, he was pretty stoked, though.
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life claimed that Paris Geller was responsible for the birth of Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka’s twins
Fans knew Gilmore Girls for its pop culture references. Over the years, Lorelai Gilmore and Rory Gilmore referenced everything from famous actors to obscure musical groups. It’s no surprise that Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life offered fans more of the same. The Netflix original revival even managed to reference Harris and his famous family.
Harris, his husband, and his twins were mentioned when Lorelai and Luke Danes visited Paris Geller to discuss the possibility of using a surrogate to have a baby. In an attempt to sell Lorelai and Luke on the idea of using a surrogate, Paris mentioned that her firm helped Harris and his husband become parents. The reference is interesting, but the timing wouldn’t make a ton of sense. Paris graduated from college in 2007. She wouldn’t have even made it through medical school when Harris and Burtka decided to start a family.
Neil Patrick Harris responded to Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life mentioning his family
Harris had no clue that Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life mentioned his family for more than a year after Netflix released the revival. Once he found out about it, though, he was rather pleased. In an interview with TV Line, Harris was informed that the show claimed Paris helped him and his husband, David Burtka become parents.
Harris, with a grin, indicated that he was beyond happy with the name drop. He told the publication, “Paris did a good job. I’m a fan of our kids.” Harris might not be a big enough Gilmore Girls fans to have seen the revival, but apparently, Amy Sherman-Palladino is a big fan of him. According to The Toronto Star, Harris was mentioned a staggering eight times in the revival. Still, the surrogacy shoutout is the one that stuck out to fans.
Neil Patrick Harris doesn’t know which of his twins he fathered
Harris married his longtime partner, Burtka, in 2014. Before they married, they became parents. In 2010, Burtka and Harris welcomed twins, Gideon Scott and Harper Grace, via surrogate. In a candid interview with Barbara Walters, Harris explained that doctors used sperm from both Harris and Burtka to fertilize two donor eggs. He said that he and Burtka had hoped that both eggs would take, and that’s exactly what happened.
Their twins were born healthy and happy, but they don’t know who fathered which twin. They, reportedly, have no intention of ever finding out. The biology of the situation doesn’t matter to them. According to The Bump, Harris did suggest he and Burtka have their suspicions based on their twins’ behaviors. Fans have their guesses, too, based on the looks of the now 10-year-olds.
