Oti Mabuse, 30, has been a professional on Strictly Come Dancing since 2015 and in that time, she has had six celebrities partners. The stage performer has also won the BBC dance show twice in consecutive fashion, with her latest victory coming last year with comedian Bill Bailey, 56. However, it seems behind-the-scenes, the reigning champion does tend to “lie” to not only her partners but also to other contestants, as she admitted on Tuesday’s edition of Steph’s Packed Lunch.

Steph McGovern, 38, said to Oti with regards to a discussion about whether it’s right or not to lie: “I can’t imagine you telling any fibs.”

Letting out a nervous laugh, the professional dancer replied: “Usually, I don’t have a reason to lie – I’m just brutally honest.

“But there is something called lying for morale like you lie to boost the morale,” she continued, leaving the host curious.

“With my job, when it’s a Tuesday or a Wednesday, I have to say, ‘You look amazing,’ just so they can have confidence.”

Letting out a big gasp, the presenter responded: “[You lie] to the Strictly contestants?” to which Oti openly admitted she does.

Explaining herself, Oti added: “It’s not a bad thing because, on Saturday, they are then amazing, honestly.

“I go, ‘That’s not so good,’ but if I say it, they would feel really bad. But if I say, ‘Good job, you could do better and it was terrible,’ they still feel, ‘I can do this.’”

Steph remarked: “And that is how you win,” commenting on the professional dancer’s two consecutive victories.

The stage performer agreed, replying: “Yes, I convince them they can do it in their heads and then they do it.”

Following her win with Bill in December, the professional dancer was set to embark on her own arena tour this year.

It had been postponed from early 2020 after the coronavirus pandemic brought a halt to proceedings, which left her and her fans disappointed.

With some developments made since March, it was hoped the show would go ahead in the next few months but it has now been pushed back to 2022.

Devastated by the news, Oti took to her Instagram account and made the heartbreaking announcement she wouldn’t be on stage this year.

In view of her 565,000 followers, she wrote: “Hey Gang! In light of the situation and for the safety of everyone – we have made the decision to postpone ‘I am Here’ to 2022. Trust!

“I would have loved nothing more than to dance for you all especially it being my first solo tour but the safety of everyone takes priority.

“Thank you to those who have supported this project and I am motivated more now to make it even better for you all in 2022!” she concluded.

Some of her fans have responded to the news and shared their commiserations with the professional dancer.

One wrote on Instagram: “Such a shame, but my Dad and I having something to look forward to for next year, totally the right decision!”

Another posted: “Such a Big Decision to make but, I am so sure it will be worth the wait. Stay safe xx.”

Whilst a third commented: “Well will just have to wait a little longer. Longer and stronger. See you in 2022. It will be worth the wait.”

“Gutted for you (and me!) but understandable and the right thing to do. We’ll see you in 2022!” a fourth shared.

Steph’s Packed Lunch airs weekdays at 12:30pm on Channel 4. Strictly Come Dancing returns later this year on BBC One.
