Ozark began as a story of a family on the run but has quickly built itself up to be one of the most gripping dramas on Netflix. No character is safe in the series though, as death is lurking just around the corner for almost everyone involved. Many fans are speculating who could be next to bite the bullet, and most agree it won’t be Ruth Langmore (played by Julia Garner) after spotting a telling clue.
Ever since Ozark first debuted back in 2017, fans have been left on the edge of their seats as the characters continually avoid a sticky end.
Throughout it all has been Ruth, a 19-year-old caught in the middle of a family with a habitual petty crime problem.
Ruth has walked the line between good and bad on several occasions, though she has always meant well despite some questionable decisions.
In many ways, she has become the heart of the series, with viewers desperate to see her escape the trappings of her upbringing and live a better life.
Despite the show’s realistic and often brutal outlook on life, many think the series will end with a small bright spark to level out the dark.
This spark is Ruth for many fans who have taken to Reddit to discuss who might die and who should live in the fourth and final season.
User ChimpWithaMG wrote: “Who is most likely to die in season 4?” (sic)
StaySafePovertyGhost replied: “Ruth is the soul of the show – much like Jesse in Breaking Bad. It would be a really bad move to kill her off and if it’s so Marty can survive – meh, no thanks.
“The only other people she’d sacrifice herself for are Wyatt or Three.”
Of course, the comparison with Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) could be fitting.
Viewers will remember while the character had a brutal final season, literally being enslaved, he managed to survive the chaos beyond the show and sequel movie, El Camino.
Ruth’s arc has been similar so far in Ozark, being a misguided teen who found friendship in an older figure, in this case, Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman).
While the Reddit user believes Ruth will make it out of the chaos alive, they are less hopeful for the Byrdes themselves.
StaySafePovertyGhost added: “One of the Byrdes will be dead by the end of the show. The entire main arc has been built around them being in a dangerous world where all their lives have been in grave danger at some point.
“It’s unrealistic to think they will outsmart the entire federal government and the Navarro cartel and walk away clean.”
Omar Navarro (Felix Solis) shocked viewers when he murdered Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer).
Her death set in motion the events of the upcoming fourth season, with the trailer already showing the aftermath of the shooting.
The Byrdes are seen looking into a mirror still covered in blood and shaken after the killing.
While the tone has always been dark, this is set to be the most sobering season so far for the show.
Ruth’s survival would give viewers a small respite from the darkness, but this series is known for its unpredictability, so who knows who will get out alive.
Ozark season four will premiere on January 21 exclusively on Netflix.
