The fifth season of Riverdale has finally continued after taking a lengthy hiatus back in March of this year. With sinister cults, escaped convicts and a supernatural mystery still plaguing the small town in the unpredictable CW series, all fans want to know is whether Archie (played by KJ Apa) and Betty (Lili Reinhart) will be getting back together.

Recent comments from Riverdale boss Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa have hinted ‘Barchie’ will finally become official in the second half of season five.

Their friendship is still in a rocky place after their illicit kiss in season four broke off their current relationships with Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Veronica (Camila Mendes).

At the start of season five, viewers briefly got what they were waiting for as the pair became friends with benefits for a few episodes.

Unfortunately, this arrangement didn’t last for long, nor did it blossom into anything more than physical.

In a new interview with TV Insider, Aguirre-Sacasa suggested fans will be much happier with how their dynamic plays out in the back half of season five.

He explained: “I will say that by the end of the season, there is a clear resolution to both Betty’s relationship to Jughead and Tabitha’s relationship to Jughead.

“I’m loath to call it a love triangle though, because we’re not really pitting Betty against Tabitha, but I will say that both women go on their own journeys regarding their relationships with Jughead.”

When the gang returned to town seven years later, some ‘Barchie’ supporters were concerned their reunion could lead to Betty and Jughead getting back together.

However, the latest episode saw Jughead going off grid, as well as Betty revealing an insulting and rambling voice mail she received from her drunken ex during their separation.

It seems any chance of giving their relationship another spin is completely off the table, especially with a new love interest, Tabitha (Erinn Westbrook) currently running Pop’s Diner.

The showrunner then teased: “I think it surprised us in the writer’s room, so I hope that it will surprise fans too.”

It’s clear there are still plenty of surprises in store over the next nine episodes of the current season.

Moreover, Aguirre-Sacasa revealed he has taken heed of some of the backlash Riverdale received when Archie and Betty broke it off in the first half of the season.

When asked if the close friends would finally take their relationship to the next level, the showrunner indicated fans would be pleasantly surprised by the coming developments.

He told TV Insider: “I’ve gotten called-out a little bit because I said we’re really going to explore that and then they broke up. They tabled their “friends with benefits” relationship.

“I will say, though, especially towards the end of Season 5, we do see more Betty and Archie, and we do see their friendship evolve into something else.”

As Archie’s ex-girlfriend Veronica is still in the process of divorcing her husband Chad (Chris Mason), he may grow tired of waiting and start looking at Betty in a different light.

Chad will almost certainly be out of the picture by the end of the season, but that doesn’t necessarily mean ‘Varchie’ is a done deal.

Archie may be keeping himself busy as Riverdale’s new bounty hunter, but he might finally start thinking about settling down once all the escaped convicts have been rounded up.

Riverdale season 5 continues Wednesdays on The CW and the following Thursday on Netflix.
