Small Axe: John Boyega stars in Red, White and Blue trailer

Small Axe airs its final film on Sunday, December 13 as Steve McQueen’s five-film saga is brought to an end. The groundbreaking series of stories has been adored by audiences and critics alike. has rounded up everything you need to know about if there will be any more films.

Will there be another series of Small Axe?

Viewers will know Small Axe is a collection of five films curated, written and directed by Oscar-winner McQueen.

They have each told an individual and unconnected story about the West-Indian community of London in the 1960s and 1970s.

So far, the anthology series has retold the life of novelist Alex Weatle as well as the real story of the Mangrove cafe.

On Sunday, December 13, the series will be brought to a close with the release of Education.

This episode is about a 12-year-old boy named Kingsley (played by Kenyah Sandy) who is segregated from his classmates for being disruptive and placed in a school for children with special needs.

Given the huge success of the films over the past five weeks, many viewers will be wondering if there will be any more on their way.

The BBC told in a comment how while there were currently no plans for a second season, they would be open to the idea.

Senior drama commissioner and executive producer Lucy Richer said: “‘We couldn’t be prouder of Small Axe.

“It was originally conceived as a stand-alone collection of films for BBC One.

“But we would, of course, be delighted to welcome Steve McQueen back to BBC One should he decide to broaden the Small Axe collection.

“There are so many more stories burning to be told and Steve is a truly visionary film-maker.”

McQueen has no more films in the pipeline yet and the first collection of films were also 10 years in the making, so viewers could be waiting a while for more of the critically acclaimed series.

Whether any of the series acclaimed cast including John Boyega, Letitia Wright and Sharlene Whyte would return, is not yet clear.

However, given the nature of the anthology series starring a new cast with each film, this seems unlikely.

As for what McQueen would focus if he were to return, the filmmaker opened up about his intentions with the project earlier this year.

At a press screening, he explained: “I feel that for me, this series of films is like science fiction movies, as far as I’m concerned.

“It tells us where we are now and how far we’ve come. But ultimately, it tells us how far we need to go.

“And that’s always the case with me and how I felt about Small Axe. It’s always been about the future.”

As soon as any more is released about the future of Small Axe, will keep viewers updated.

Small Axe airs on Sundays at 9pm and is available on BBC iPlayer.
