Few film franchises have been able to stand the test of time. However, Star Wars remains one of the most popular franchises in the history of cinema. Disney acquired the rights to the Star Wars franchise from George Lucas. Some feared that Disney would not do justice to the Star Wars universe.

And then came The Mandalorian. There have been other Mandalorians from the franchise, namely Jango and Boba Fett, the latter taking possession of Han Solo’s body after he was frozen in carbonite to collect a bounty from Jabba the Hutt.

The series takes place nine years after A New Hope and five years after the Emperor’s defeat in Return of the Jedi. The show centers around a Mandalorian, a bounty hunter who is hired by what remains of the Imperial forces to collect the child, later named Grogu.

Instead, he goes on the run to protect The Child all the while looking to reunite Grogu with his kind. They are pursued by Moff Gideon, who wants to use Grogu’s connection to the Force for presumably nefarious reasons.

One of the original ‘Star Wars’ characters returns

In the last episode of season two, a familiar face returns to the series. We see Luke Skywalker come to collect Grogu so that he can teach him the ways of the force. Fans have loved seeing Mark Hamill reprise his role as Luke Skywalker, though some are not happy with the CGI effects that make him appear younger.

There was at first some speculation as to whether it was actually Hamill and not a body double. Although some scenes do use a stunt man, Mark Hamill was on set and did a lot of the scenes himself. There will be a special Disney Gallery episode of The Mandalorian, which will detail what happened and Hamill’s involvement in the Emmy-winning series.

One teaser photo that has been released shows Hamill as Luke Skywalker holding Grogu with his trusty sidekick R2-D2 by his side. Fans on Reddit couldn’t get enough of the photo, with one fan commenting “I love him.”

Fan reactions to Luke Skywalker’s return

The inclusion of Luke Skywalker in the final episode of season two was kept a tightly guarded secret. So when the finale finally aired, there was an outpouring of nostalgia from long-time fans of the franchise. Fans have taken to Reddit to discuss and speculate about the future of the show. One fan stated:

“One of the very few actors who spend their entire careers mostly associated with one role from their youth and doesn’t seem utterly resentful of it. He loves Star Wars and the fans and shows it whenever he gets a chance, what a lad.”

A picture of Hamill holding Grogu is accompanied by the post, showing fans that Hamill was, indeed, a big part of the episode.

Fans have welcomed the new show with open arms and are now invested even more deeply thanks to Hamill’s performance during the episode. Clearly a fan favorite, Luke Skywalker was clearly the right choice to make the reappearance in the show. The way the show has played out, it’s almost as if the entire series has led to this point.

What’s next for ‘The Mandalorian’

The creators of The Mandalorian have certainly struck a vein with fans. Bringing back Luke Skywalker and making Grogu his apprentice was a smart move. But fans are left wondering, will we ever see them again? Is this the last time we will see The Child?

For now, we can rest easy on the knowledge that a third season is already in the works, but it won’t premiere until after The Book of Boba Fett spinoff with Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen airs. That puts it squarely in the realm of 2022, at the earliest.

Star Wars is a universe that grows every year with new characters and prequel stories springing up occasionally. It’s easy to get swept up in the stories of faith, triumph, tragedy, and renewal. It speaks to us in a way that few stories have. In the dull, drab, everyday life here on planet Earth, it’s nice to be able to escape occasionally to that galaxy far, far away.
