STRICTLY Come Dancing's Katya Jones has told The Sun that the show's infamous curse is the result of "empowered" celebs giving up on unhappy relationships.

The BBC One dance show has been branded "cursed" after almost a dozen couples over 18 series split following an experience with the programme.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun, Katya mused: "Obviously there have been lots of stories… but also there are so many more examples of nothing happening, and people being happy at home with their families.

"But I think some people get empowered by it because of the sense of achievement they get from doing this brilliant show.

"Maybe they didn’t have the confidence, or the strength, to do these things before, or maybe some people were in long-term, unhappy relationships and doing Strictly empowered them to realise they could do better."

She added: "People find themselves again. They realise they can do this and feel they can take on the world – that’s the amazing thing about this show."

Two years ago, Katya was herself involved in a Strictly scandal when she was pictured snogging her then celeb partner Seann Walsh after a boozy night out.

She was married to fellow pro Neil Jones at the time, with comic Seann in a relationship with actress Rebecca Humphries.

But Katya has now insisted that she is closer than ever to her ex-husband, who she split from last August.

She told us: "It was mental, and it took time to get over it but the way I came out of it, I am happy, and my ex-husband Neil and I have never been so close. Which I think says it all."

The professional dancer said of their break up: "We just came to the conclusion that we were really good friends but that the romantic side had gone.

"Even during lockdown Neil and I have been in constant touch over FaceTime and checking in with each other. We’ve known each other for 12 years, were married for seven, and that's not been for nothing.

"I know him better than he knows himself, or better than his mum and dad. We’ve gone through hard times together, sad times and happy times, and now have never been so good."

Katya went on to give Neil's new girlfriend, Luisa Eusse, her seal of approval as she confirmed to The Sun that she is currently single.

Other celebs to have fallen victim to the Strictly Curse include Louise Redknapp, who ended her 18-year marriage to husband Jamie after a stint on the 2016 series.

And 2018 champ Stacey Dooley split from her boyfriend of three years before confirming her relationship with professional partner Kevin Clifton.

And in 2013, Ben Cohen ended his 11-year marriage with wife Abby Blayney -later announcing that he was in a relationship with Strictly professional partner Kristina Rihanoff.
