The hit CBS action-drama series SWAT follows the specialist unit as they solve crimes in Los Angeles. After an explosive season four on CBS, fans are excited to see the fallout in the upcoming fifth season, however, production has, sadly, been hit by a Covid outbreak, leaving viewers unsure of the fate of the series.
SWAT, based on the 1975 television series and the 2003 feature film of the same names respectively, is created by The Shield’s creator Shawn Ryan.
Starring Shemar Moore as lead Sergeant Hondo Harrelson Jr, the series follows his struggles as he joins the elite squad.
The character must ease tensions between the LAPD and the Los Angeles community, as well as tackling race relations in the city.
The show was renewed for a fifth season earlier this year but the spread of the Delta variant of the coronavirus has shut down production.
As Deadline reports, five positive cases of Covid have been confirmed on the set of SWAT.
The Delta variant of the virus has been sweeping through California the last few weeks and has hit many sets in and around Hollywood.
It was reported that the latest spike in positive cases was the biggest one-day jump in California in 2021.
Filming for the series takes place at Santa Clarita Studios North of Los Angeles, with the LA County Health Department confirming the outbreak.
As more and more shows are forced to pause production, little is known about whether SWAT will be forced to do the same but, at the moment, it seems likely.
SWAT wasn’t the only show hit as Los Angeles confirmed that the virus has made its way to several other TV sets.
HBO’s Westworld and FX’s popular anthology series American Horror Story have also been forced to shut down filming.
With the variant cases rising, how will the latest cases affect the schedule of SWAT?
In the meantime, showrunner Ryan has promised a major shift in the narrative for the forthcoming season.
He revealed to TVLine that a large part of season five will be set and filmed in Mexico.
The other cast members, however, will have Los Angeles-based plots and won’t be joining Hondo across the border.
Ryan teases fans with a major hint that Clint Eastwood’s famous western films are a major inspiration for the upcoming season.
He stated: “As Hondo tries to decide what to do next with his career, he finds himself regrouping at a friend’s vacation home in rural Mexico.”
Ryan explained that the classic Eastwood westerns, such as Sergio Leone’s famous The Dollars Trilogy—which includes A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly—is the primary inspiration for the latest season.
For the first few episodes of season five, Moore’s Hondo will also take a cue from Eastwood’s most famous character of all, The Man With No Name.
However, while Hondo is away, he is “reluctantly pulled into the troubles of a local widow and her daughter,” Ryan teases fans.
The showrunner added that the “spectacular mountain backdrop” will be “unlike anything you see on scripted television”.
Seasons one to four of SWAT are available to watch on CBS in the US, and season five is still scheduled to debut on October 1, 2021.
