He said the role could be compared to Chanakya – an ancient Indian teacher and economist who acted as an advisor to Chandragupta Maurya, the founder of the Maurya Empire.
Speaking to News 18 he said: “My character is Chanakya-like, in the guise of a youth leader who comes from a privileged background and aspires to become the prime minister.”
The star said he had grown up watching shows about politics, which is what attracted him to the role.
He said there had not been many Indian shows centered around the world of politics, which showed people from all walks of life.
Singh said the story had similar themes to Chanakya’s story, as he lived vicariously through Chandragupta Maurya so he could still run the show.
The actor revealed how he enjoyed playing characters with a dark edge to them, as Singh is described as being “morally compromised”.
He is determined to become the leader of the country, not matter what it takes to get there.
In the trailer for the series, a voice is heard saying the “true king” was “the country’s prime minister”.
Regarding Chanakya, he was believed to have been born in 375 BCE and he was known to have written various political texts.
He was one of the leading lights in political science and economics in India, and his works were only rediscovered in the early 20th century.
