Season four of Hulu’s dystopian series had fans on the edge of their seats every episode, with viewers across the world rooting for Janine Lindo (played by Madeline Brewer) to make it to Canada. In an emotional scene of The Handmaid’s Tale, it was revealed that she was brought back to Gilead, however, she could finally escape once and for all.
Viewers were first introduced to Janine in season one when she was brought to the Red Center among other women to become Handmaids in Gilead.
The state had gone into power and enforced misogynistic laws to force fertile women to become surrogates against their will.
The Red Center is where the women were held and trained to become Handmaids before being situated with a family.
On arrival, Janine had had an attitude that rubbed the evil enforcer Aunt Lydia the wrong way and once Janine swore at her, she had her eye removed as punishment for disobedience.
During the night she suffered a complete breakdown as she reflected on her past life as a waitress.
This forced Moira Strand (Samira Wiley) and June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) to verbally shake her and snap her out of that state and they knew Aunt Lydia wouldn’t show her any mercy.
Throughout the series, Janine suffered major trauma, in season one Janine was sentenced to death by stoning by her fellow Handmaids but they refused and dropped the stones.
Because of this, she was sent to the colonies where convicted women are forced to work among polluted and radioactive waste until it killed them.
Janine was allowed to resume her duties as a Handmaid after an attack killed many, so she was called to replace those women.
In season four, June, Janine and a ton of other Handmaids were able to escape, thanks to The Martha’s Network they were able to find shelter at Esther Keyes’ (McKenna Grace) house where she lived with her elderly husband Commander Keyes (Bill MacDonald).
There they discovered that the child bride was getting raped by her husband and other commanders in an effort to get pregnant.
However, in a devastating scene, the house had been raided by Guardians and the Handmaids were caught and headed back to Gilead for punishment.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 5: June ends up in prison? Showrunner hints [THEORY]
As the vehicle was stopped at level crossings and the driver stepped out of the van to pee, June saw an opportunity to escape and the ladies made a run for it. Unfortunately, only June and Janine made it across in time to beat the train. Some of the women she shot by the driver whereas others collided with the train.
The two women were able to reach Chicago where they experienced an air raid attack, Janine was able to make it to Canada after being found by Moira whereas Janine was trapped under the rubble and nowhere to be found.
The next time viewers saw Janine she was back in Gilead, having been captured and was in The Red Center with Esther, who had been arrested for poisoning her husband and hiding fugitive Handmaids.
Showrunner Bruce Miller, revealed that Janine just might escape in the upcoming season five.
When asked about Janine’s fate in Gilead he responded: “But Janine is June’s heart in Gilead, June would do anything to get Janine out now.
“I think she feels responsible for her and Esther, too, so what happens to Janine and Esther definitely affects June as the hub of our wheel,” he added.
So there’s a possibility that June could help both Janine and Esther escape, but fans will have to wait until the release of season five to find out if they do make it out of Gilead.
