The Walking Dead season 11 was always going to be a game-changer for the show. As the last season in the zombie-filled series, the AMC premiere’s re-introduction of the Commonwealth has already opened so many new possibilities moving forward. One of them could be Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) living in the new nation.

Is Rick Grimes in The Commonwealth?

Fans last saw Rick Grimes during the fifth episode of season nine, being airlifted away in a helicopter.

The fan-favourite character’s exit has been shrouded in mystery ever since, with Rick clearly still alive.

After destroying a bridge to stop a zombie horde from reaching the other survivors, Rick is thrown into a river and swept away.

That is until Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh), who has been camped near the survivor’s camp, pulls Rick out of the water.

She then calls a helicopter to come and pick them up, leading Rick to safety.

The last time he is seen is laying in the helicopter, being told that he will be okay.

Many fans now believe Rick could be living in The Commonwealth, especially as in the original Robert Kirkman comics he played such a crucial role with them.

However, the series is known for diverting quite heavily from the original source material, for example, Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) does not appear in the comics.

However, during an interview with Deadline, showrunner Angela Kang was asked about the likelihood of Rick’s imminent return.

In a deliberately evasive response, Kang explained: “I’ve been getting this question a lot, and it is one question that I cannot get into, so, yeah, I’m going to have to respectfully evade.”

Viewers may take her vague response as an indication there is something to hide about the character, but AMC has been keeping the main plot of season 11 under lock and key.

Kang did stress though that the season would have major implications for the wider Walking Dead universe.

Kang continued: “I think, you know, it really, truly, doesn’t mean one thing or another, but there’s other things happening in the franchise.

“There is universe implication. So, there’s a lot that’s sort of like not really under my umbrella.”

Whether or not Rick does come back in the new season, fans will get to see the character again eventually.

A Rick Grimes movie is in development, one that will continue after the events of season nine or season 11.

The plot is completely unknown, but it does mean that Rick is still running around somewhere out there in the apocalypse.

If he does make an appearance in season 11, it would likely be near the end of the season, with 24 total episodes to play with.

A re-introduction would be the perfect way to bring him back before the film, though a release date on that is still to be announced.

There is also a Daryl and Carol (Melissa McBride) spin-off in early development, meaning there could be the possibility Rick could appear there.

The Walking Dead season 11 airs Sunday on AMC in the USA and the following day on Star via Disney Plus in the UK.
