The new series of The Yorkshire Vet returns to Channel 5 on Tuesday. Veterinarians Julian Norton and Peter Wright will be back as they tend to animals in need at their practices in North Yorkshire. The duo, who have been a staple on the show since it began in 2015, have quickly become firm favourites with viewers. However, fans will be delighted to see more of a few new faces in the coming weeks.

Younger veterinarians Shona Searson, David Melleney and Matthew Smith are all relatively new faces to the programme, and in the upcoming series the trio will be featuring more.

However, in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, the TV stars admitted they were nervous about making their debut on the programme.

Shona explained to begin with, she was worried because the show was already so well established, and she wasn’t sure how fans would react to them.

“I was really worried about whether they would be accepting of new faces,” she began.

Matthew said in agreement with Shona: “Yeah, for me it was exactly the same.

“We were not sure how the audience was going to react as they’re used to watching it and then suddenly there is a new face.

“And they’d be like ‘I don’t know who these people are, are they going to be any good?’

“And you can’t say down the channel ‘Hi guys we are trying our best’.”

“It was nerve-wracking,” the vet added. “And it was hard not keeping track of social media because everyone likes to share their opinions on there.”

Despite their initial worries, Shona, David and Matthew have been given a warm reception from The Yorkshire Vet fans.

David explained: “The reaction to the three of us has been far warmer, as you always think ‘How is it going to go down?’

“It has been really nice to see from people we meet through work and other things you see online.”

“There’s a support group on Facebook and everyone has been so nice and welcoming to the series,” David added.

“It is a really sweet and humbling experience.”

Before making their debut on the programme, Julian and Peter were on hand to give the trio advice.

Matthew explained: “They initially said ‘Just call us anytime and speak to us if you need help with anything’.”

“They have been great in helping us if we got stuck with anything,” the vet added.

David went on to discuss what it has been like filming with both Peter and Julian.

He said: “Peter is such a genuinely warm character and that is why people love him on screen.

“It exactly the same consistency when you are with him.”

The Yorkshire Vet airs on Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 5.
