Piers Morgan has been the presenter of Life Stories for 12 years but back in October, he announced he would be leaving the role on Twitter. His final interview with Kate Garraway will air on Sunday night before his replacement steps in. Why did he quit and who is taking over?

Who is replacing Piers Morgan on Life Stories?

When Morgan announced his departure from the long-running series, it came as a shock for viewers.

However, the original host is not stepping down immediately as he will interview Garraway for his final episode.

The episode, which drops on December 3 on ITV, will act as a crossover for the new host, with Morgan teasing there wasn’t “a dry eye in the house”.

Morgan posted on his Twitter account: “BREAKING NEWS: I’m quitting Life Stories after 12 years and 100 shows.

“My final one will be with my fabulous friend @kategarraway and she will then present the remaining 3 planned shows of the next series as I leave ITV to host my new global daily show. It’s been a blast!”

Garraway is Morgan’s former Good Morning Britain co-host, making her the perfect choice to take over on Life Stories.

While unconfirmed, the episode will likely focus on Garraway’s public battle to help her husband, Derek Draper, through long Covid.

Speaking to The Sun, Morgan said: “I can’t think of anyone who I’d rather finish my run with.

“Kate was a wonderfully loyal colleague during my five years on Good Morning Britain and is one of my favourite people in the world.

“How she’s handled the devastating situation with Derek sums her up.

“She’ll be as brilliant at Life Stories as she is at everything else.”

The episode promises to be “highly emotional”, as Morgan teased fans on Twitter it is “very funny, incredibly inspiring and a wonderful testament to the power of life and love”.

Why did Piers Morgan quit Life Stories?

Morgan made a shock exit from Good Morning Britain back in March and went on to sever ties with ITV completely.

For months there was speculation on what and where the journalist will go next, but confirmation finally came in September.

Morgan has joined talkTV, a new news channel from Rupert Murdoch’s News UK, and will have his own show.

The current affairs TV channel will officially launch in early 2022 and will be available on linear television and to stream on Smart TVs.

No official launch date has been set by News UK, though it will likely drop no sooner than March.

Life Stories with Kate Garraway will premiere on Sunday, December 5 at 8pm on ITV.
