Classic cars take to the road for London to Brighton run: More than 320 veteran motors mark 125th anniversary of annual event by completing 60 mile route from capital

  • The event took place for the first time in 1896 to celebrate the raising of the speed limit from 4mph to 14mph
  • Today’s event saw over 320 ‘veteran’ vehicles – that is, built before 1905 –  make the historic 60-mile journey
  • A symbolic tearing up of a red flag in Hyde Park kicked off the event, which ended on Madeira Drive, Brighton

Over 320 classic cars made the 60 mile trip from London to Brighton today, marking the 125th anniversary of the annual RM Sotheby’s veteran car run.

The first veteran car run from London to Brighton took place in 1896 in celebration of the speed limit rising from 4mph to 14mph.  

All of the vehicles in the fleet making the annual 60-mile journey from Hyde Park, London, to Madeira Drive, Brighton, date back to at least 1904.

‘Veteran’ motors are defined as those built before 31 December 1904, according to the The National Motor Museum Trust. 

The classic cars began arriving at 10am this morning at the seaside resort, having started to file out of Hyde Park at sunrise.

All of the vehicles in the event dated back to at least 1904. The event has its roots in a liberalisation of laws governing automobiles in 1896

Before the liberalisation of road laws in 1896, drivers could not exceed 4mph, and they were required to have an escort with a red flag walking ahead of them 

The event kicked off in London with the symbolic tearing up of a red flag.

Before 1896, the date of the first London-to-Brighton car run, automobile operators were required to have an escort waving a red flag twenty yards ahead of them. 

After the flag-ripping, the classic cars made their way through Admiralty Arch, down Constitution Hill, past Buckingham Palace and onto Parliament Square.

The convoy then split into two groups to reduce congestion and show their consideration for modern motorists on the road.

The 60-mile historic route from London to Brighton was completed for the 125th time today by over 320 classic cars 

One cohort of classic cars took the traditional route, crossing Westminster Bridge and going on the A23 via Kensington, Brixton and Streatham.

Meanwhile, the other half crossed the Thames over Lambeth Bridge and followed the A3, A24, A217 and A236 over Clapham Common and then through Tooting and Mitcham, reports The Argus.

The two groups were reunited on the A236 north of Croydon  as they headed south through Surrey, then to Hassocks and Clayton and finally ending up on Madeira Drive, Brighton.
