Princess Diana's former butler has said Prince Charles "was married to probably the most beautiful woman in the world but he didn’t look after her" in his own review of Netflix hit The Crown.

Paul Burrell, 62, says he was Di's "rock" while serving as a footman to the Queen and butler to Princess Diana until her death in 1997 – and claims to have been very close to her.

And the former butler has shared his opinion on the royal relationship while discussing whether The Crown gives a truthful representation of the family's affairs in The Sun.

In the latest series, based on the life of Queen Elizabeth II, viewers have seen the breakdown of the marriage between Diana and Prince Charles.

And in his latest interview, Mr Burrell speaks about Prince Charles and Princess Diana's relationship, claiming the Prince of Wales "was married to probably the most beautiful woman in the world but he didn’t look after her".

He also claims to have had a conversation with Diana in which he was told: "I thought when I got married that my husband would be there for me, to care for me, to support me, to encourage me, but he isn’t."

Recalling his time serving the royal couple, Mr Burrell said: “Josh O’Connor plays Prince Charles as a rather uncaring, cold person. And I’m afraid that’s what I saw behind closed doors.

“Diana said to me, ‘I thought when I got married that my husband would be there for me, to care for me, to support me, to encourage me, but he isn’t’."

The Crown actress Emma Corrin recently addressed speculation that members of the Royal Family were not happy with the portrayal of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Former aide to The Queen, Dickie Arbiter, has lashed out on the show claiming they did "a hatchet job on Prince Charles and a bit of a hatchet job on Diana".

Speaking on the Tamron Hall Show, the star said: "I understand why people would be upset because this is history.

"And even with Diana, it's still very much fresh, everything that happens. So I do really understand if people would be upset."

The Prince of Wales's representatives declined the Daily Star's request for comment.
