An Indonesian headteacher who raped 13 students and impregnated eight of them has been sentenced to death by a court after his initial life in prison sentence was overturned.
Herry Wirawan received the death penalty after Indonesia's Bandung High Court heard how the series of rapes had taken place over the course of six years at an Islamic school.
The court stated on its website: "[We] hereby punish the defendant with the death penalty."
The disgraced headteacher had initially received a life sentence by a city court, but prosecutors approached the high court and filed an appeal seeking a death penalty for him.
Wirawan was also asked by the court to pay compensation of 300 million Indonesian rupiahs (£15,922).
A court heard that Wirawan had sexually assaulted girls aged between 12 and 16 years over a six year period from 2016 to 2021, with the crimes coming to light after one of the survivor's families complained to police.
Reports indicate that at least nine babies were birthed from the series of rapes, and some teenagers suffered injuries in Wirawan's many assaults.
According to the court, Wirawan used 10 different locations to assault the girls, including a hotel, an apartment, the school foundation's office and a boarding school room.

He assaulted the students under the pretext of offering them a massage and the court report indicates he intimidated victims by saying they "must obey the teacher".
The disgraced headteacher promised marriage and finance for survivor's college fees and promised to take care of the children conceived by victims.
Wirawan's wife had reportedly been aware of the series of rapes but did not act because she had been "brainwashed" by him.
