Facebook and Instagram are down.

The reasons are not yet known with first reports coming in late on Thursday.

An error message on Facebook reads: "Sorry, something went wrong.

"We're working on getting this fixed as soon as we can."

Instagram says: "Oops, an error occurred."

Social media users have been left frustrated by the outage with many venting on Twitter.

It comes nearly a month after Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp went down for an hour.

The social tools, all owned by Facebook, failed across the world on March 19.

Social media users were also left unable to connect to the platform's own Messenger service.

It was first reported as not being available from 3.30pm UK time on the Friday.

Users visiting Instagram online were shown a simple error message saying '5xx Server Error', with no other information provided.

Facebook and Instagram users have been sharing their experiences and frustrations on other social network sites such as Twitter.
