REPORTS of an active shooter at a mall sent terrified shoppers fleeing and armed cops rushing to the scene on Friday.

Local police rushed to the shopping hub on Friday night in what was being described as an “active situation" that possibly involved a "gunman".

Authorities declared that a situation involving a knife escalated with a purported shooting event.

But that is still being investigated.

"At about 5:30pm Milpitas [Police Department] #MilpitasPD received a report of an altercation where someone brandished a knife," the police tweeted.

"Shortly after a shooting was reported inside of Burlington Coat Factory.

"Officers have checked the business and there is no indication a shooting occurred inside."

The police are now sweeping the mall to determine that there is no active shooter situation and confirmed that so far no victims have been found.

"Due to conflicting information, we are in the process of checking the entire mall out of an abundance of caution," they noted in a subsequent tweet.

"At this time we have not located nor have any reported victims related to the initial call regarding the knife or shooting."

The local police confirmed other agencies, including San Jose and Santa Clara have joined them in canvassing "the interior of the mall."

"As we locate shoppers & store employees who sheltered in place, Officers will escort them out of the mall," they stated.

Cops noted that they are continuing to search the mall premises and still have yet to find anyone hurt as a result of the knife "altercation."

"Officers continue to search the Great Mall interior to assist those who remain sheltered in place," a Friday night tweet reads.

"Again, no victims were located within the mall nor reported to us to have sustained any injuries due to the initial altercation or reported shooting."

Initially, the mall was swept up in chaos with shoppers fearing there might be an active shooter on the loose.

"Reports of shots fired inside the Burlington Coat Factory at The Great Mall in Milpitas," according to a tweet by EightOneEcho. "Heavy law enforcement multi-aid responding to Milpitas at this time!"

KPIX captured video footage from a chopper showing a flurry of Milpitas police units and police vehicles from neighboring agencies descending on the mall's parking lot.

Yellow crime scene tape cordoned off the parking lot of the shopping center, according to NBC Bay Area.

It appeared that after the initial reports of shots fired, some people were sheltering in place unaware if there was a gunman or not.

"They got us sheltered in the back cause of an apparent active shooter in the Great Mall," tweeted Eileen Dover, accompanying a snap of what appeared to be the backroom of a clothing store with piled garments folded on wheeled metal shelves.

Another shopper who claimed to have been evacuated from the Great Mall warned others from heading there following the alleged "active" shooting situation.

"Stay away from the Great Mall in Milpitas, we just got evacuated for another shooting and the cops are locking down the place," tweeted @BBoyBowser "Im already in my way home. Stay safe y’all."

Shortly afterward, the apparent mall employee confirmed to have exited the mall.

The tweet reads: "Made it home and coworkers are safely evacuated or at home now."

The incident caused the local Valley Transportation Authority rail lines to crawl to a halt.

"Due to police activity atGreat mall shopping center VTA light rail will not stop at the great Mall light rail station until further notice," according to a tweet.

"Apologies for the inconvenience we will let you know when the service is back to normal as soon as possible."
