The crime scene where a mum allegedly killed her three children was so horrendous that cops first on the scene are receiving emergency counselling.

Liliana Carrillo reportedly stabbed her three young kids, with one just six months old, to death before their grandmother discovered their bodies.

Emergency services were called to the bloodbath on Saturday (April 10) in Reseda, California, where they found Carrillo's children dead.

The children were reportedly due to be collected by their dad and Carillo's ex-partner, Erik Denton, later that day.

The children's grandmother made the devastating discovery at around 9:30am, before calling 911, reports the Sun.

The two boys and a girl, aged 3, 2, and 6 months were found with stab wounds but there was no sign of the mum.

The 30-year-old mum was apprehended later that day after she reportedly stole a vehicle to get away.

Lieutenant Raul Joel told the LA Times: "These are the moments we carry throughout our career. It's hard to process that as a police officer."

Reports of a custody battle between the two parents have surfaced with Erik Denton fighting for custody of the kids after Liliana Carrillo was allegedly acting unstable.

Denton's Cousin, Teri Miller, told KTTV: "Liliana was very sick, and this is not – she was not herself, and it’s been going on for several months that she has been unwell."

According to the cousin, the father had sought help from both the Department of Children and Family Services and the police because of Carrillo's behaviour.

On March 4 Denton filed for a temporary emergency visitation order and for the children's mum to undergo a mental health evaluation.

On March 12 Los Angeles Superior Court reports say that Carillo had filed for a temporary domestic violence restraining order against her ex-partner.

On March 26 orders requested by Denton were drawn up at a hearing and another was due to be held on April 14.

Lt. Anthony Cato said in a statement: "We don't know the background of the family. We're just trying to this puzzle together at this time."

According to neighbours, the children were mainly looked after by their grandmother who later tragically found them.

Cops have now named Carrillo as the lead suspect in the triple murder investigation and have not given any information regarding a possible motive.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family at this extremely difficult time.
