There are fears of mass casualties after a massive car pile-up on a lengthy stretch of American motorway left "multiple people trapped" in their cars, firefighters have reported.

Images show massive lorries, trucks and smaller cars all in a terrifying collision on the 1601 Freeway North in Fort Worth, Texas, USA.

Other pictures show a CocaCola truck rammed into a black car and a semi-truck sitting on top of a roadway barrier before a drop.

Fort Worth Fire Department is now on the scene, although rescue efforts are reportedly being hampered by thick ice on the ground and poor weather conditions.

Emergency services are working a "triage" protocol, it has been reported, with most injured in a critical condition.

The FWFD said it is also working to help "multiple people" trapped on the road inside their vehicles.
