The prime minister's official jet was reportedly used by civil servants for a £50,000 "boozy jolly".

According to The Sun, a dozen officials from the Foreign Office boarded the PM's Airbus and were given "the red carpet treatment" on a 700-mile, 91-minute flight.

Flight data shows that the plane made a trip from Stansted to the Lake District and back again.

The Government has said that it was a maintenance trip in order to avoid further costs.

A Government statement read: "In order to comply with Airbus and aviation industry rules, the aircraft was legally bound to operate a maintenance flight before 4 September or face significant additional storage costs."

It added that the trip by Foreign Office civil servants was necessary to ensure that the plane would "still meet ministerial requirements" following "a recent reconfiguration of the aircraft".

The Sun claimed that an insider described the trip as effectively a "jolly" given the inclusion of 12 men and women from the Foreign Office.

They also reported that passengers were seen taking selfies as they boarded, and that the Foreign Office confirmed there was booze onboard but refused to say if any was consumed.

Labour's shadow trade secretary Emily Thornberry told The Sun: "This would be utterly disgraceful behaviour at the best of times, but in the middle of our country's current crisis, it is shameful beyond words."

The Government is leasing the £80million plane. They spent £900,000 repainting it with a Union Jack on its tail.

Titan Airways, the plane's operator, says on its website it specialises in "bespoke air charter travel" and has a "wide array of menus and in-flight packages".
