A woman shot and killed a man early Friday morning in the Fort Collins home they shared in what police are describing as a domestic violence homicide.

At about 4:30 a.m. officers responded to the 1600 block of Sagewood Drive on a shooting, police said in a news release.

“The two involved people lived in the home together, and police learned that verbal arguments and physical violence had occurred between them overnight,” the release said.

The woman “reportedly” shot the man, police said. She then called police and remained at the scene. The man was taken to a local hospital were he was pronounced dead.

The Larimer County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of his death. His name was not released Friday.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine what, if any, criminal charges will be pursued. Investigators have no indication of any threat to the community, the release said.

“Domestic violence creates layers of pain and tragedy, and it happens among people in all walks of life,” said Assistant Chief Tim Doran, in the release. “Our hearts are with all impacted by this situation. Please know that resources are available in our community if you or someone you love is experiencing abuse.”
