A pub in Merseyside has been given a rude rebranding in a cheeky dig at the Conservative government and the new Tier 3 restrictions on the city.

The New Brighton boozer has been renamed The Three B***ends in honour of the under-fire trio Prime Minister Boris Johnson, adviser Dominic Cummings and Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

Formerly known as The James Atherton, after the man who founded the town near Liverpool, the pub's crest has also been replaced with an unflattering collage of Johnson, Cummings and Hancock with bells on their heads.

Daniel Davies, chief executive of pub owners Rockpoint Leisure, said: "The government has unequivocally blamed our sector for being fundamental to the spreading of Covid-19, despite their being overwhelming evidence to prove otherwise.

"Our business has been decimated and their lack of action has compounded the problem."

He told Liverpool Echo that the "tongue in cheek" renaming of the pub was a sign that "the gloves are off and ministers need to understand the gravity of the perilous situation they have placed us in."

Liverpool has been placed under the strictest Tier 3 lockdown today, with pubs, gyms, betting shops and casinos all forced to close.

Under Tier 3 restrictions, all pubs and bars not serving a "substantial" meal will be forced to close for a month.

The move sparked chaos in Merseyside after huge street parties broke out on the eve of the lockdown on Tuesday night.

Johnson has faced huge pressure in recent months to sack his chief adviser Dominic Cummings after it emerged he had broken quarantine while self-isolating with coronavirus to drive up to County Durham with his family to his father's home.

The row over the Number 10 insider has resurfaced today following the news Cummings had £50,000 in unpaid council tax written off for properties in the northeast.

Meanwhile, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has come under fire for his new lockdown measures in Birmingham and Liverpool, with local officials condemning the rules as potentially destroying the regional economies.

News of the pub's name change quickly spread on social media, with many praising the boozer's owners for the move.

Facebook user Mike Kinealy said: "Legend! I'll make a trip just for a pint if they keep it."
