A number of people have been injured including a police officer in a shooting at a high school in the United States.

Reports say an active shooter is still at Austin-East High School in Knoxville, Tennessee.

As of 4pm local time (9pm UK time), the scene was still being treated as active.

The school confirmed to local media it is on lockdown, with residents being urged to avoid the area.

But one reporter said parents at the school are being told by police to pick up their children from behind the school.

A large police presence has been reported at the scene, with multiple agencies at the location.

Knoxville Police Department (KPD) said a unification site had been set up at the baseball field behind the school.

"The school building has been secured and students who were not involved in the incident have been released to their families," Superintendent Bob Thomas said.

Police and emergency workers reportedly arrived at the scene at around 3pm (8pm UK time) and blocked off access to the school.
